For some reason Norton Internet Security is on my new computer. Perhaps I checked the "Yes I want it" button when installing some other software. Whatever, so I thought "Ok, lets's try it".

First it enabled a firewall which is literally not possible to disable. All the support (for this product) either has no reference to firewalls or it has directions to disable - the menus, buttons etc do not exist.

Then it offered to upgrade my copy of Norton for "free". The exact words were "This version is eligible for an upgrade. Do you want to continue?"

So I let it download and install. And what do I get? A window which is not closable saying that I must enter my email address because my 15 day trial has just begun. The only way to exit is to enter an email address and press Next. Or end the process.

What a bunch of morons. I could wax lyrical on the aweful interface or the terrible support but I won't go on anymore. I just wanted to make sure that anyone reading these forums doesn't actually spend money on this c^@p!

Mine came free with my motherboard.

I have the 60 day trial version. I haven't had any issues with it luckily!

Can't you uninstall it?

Get new PC/Hardware
See Norton xx icon on desktop
Uninstall
Run Norton Cleanup Utility
= Profit

Seen people have major problems removing it, breaks vista/win7 networking... proberbly by design...

OK, there's the problem right there! :D First replace your brain, then reformat you computer. :p

Just Kidding... no really, Norton is the devil. I see it comes with a lot of software downloads these days (same with McAfee). If you don't actually wait and see to check what other crap they are trying to give you... you can easily click past it without noticing the check box.

Fortunately there is a complete Norton removal tool on their website (if you date go there)! :)

In the old days (Windows 98), there was a joke that the quickest way to make your Pentium pc behave like an old 486, was to install Norton anti-virus. But it was actually the truth and hasnt changed.

Best one to have is Microsoft's own FREE solution, Microsoft Security Essentials.

Unfortunately Microsoft cant advertise it, cos the anti-virus companies will take them to court for anti-competitive behaviour.

The only good thing ever to come out of Norton is Norton Commander ...

Download Eset Smart Security. It has a much more friendly GUI.Easy to install and remove. Its very lite on Resources. You can get the 30day trials. It has not failed me since.

That one demands an e-mail address just to download. I don't know what's up with these software writers nowadays. Did they skip HCI classes.

I like bitdefender.

Agreed. Installed Kaspersky for something different but still think Bit Defender was better.

I will never ever have anything to with Nortons again. Some programs create more problems than the malicious virus itself. Nortons is one such program! ;)
