Norwegian ADSL comparison

Hi there

I thought I'd look for a small country to compare our services in South Africa with. Norway popped up as a good example and here is what I found:

They have just over 4 million people in that country. ADSL (same speed as SA) will cost you the equivelant of R345 after converting from the Kroner. There is a 1 GB cap but you can buy 5 GB bandwidth for R97.

The big difference is that in other countries with a capping system only DOWNLOADED INTERNATIONAL bandwith is measured. We all know the situation here....
 
Where did you find this data ? -- it sounds rather expensive for europe (/meg) -- gprs seems cheaper.
 
Its not entirely correct. There is only a cap on the cheapest ADSL line (uncapped 768 kb ia around 500 rands a month). The rest have no cap. I didnt have ADSL but had cable internet for 3 years there (i am from Norway). 1mbit for around 450 rands a month. No cap. 15 in local ping. 30 ping to Germany and 50 to even Slovenia (eastern europe). I am not happy at all about the broadband in S.A as you may understand. I used to download 2-3 gigs a night there and i still felt like i was a normal user (especially seeing other users way way worse than me) i only heard of a couple of people that got warnings on some forums, but they had been blasting full 24/7 downloading for months.
 
Why is Norway's internet so incredibly expensive, compared to Sweden where you can get 26 Mb DSL for less than $100 a month?

Sweden and South Korea have the best internet infrastructure in the world. And that is because they have been very good at laying out a fast fibre structure. Fibre is very cheap to rent in Sweden. I dont see Norway as expensive (450 rands a month for no cap 1mbit cable and the quality of the service is perfect after my 3 year experience with it). Broadband development is an important topic with the politicians, but the Swedes started earlier than the Norwegians. I am basically on fire after seeing the price of DSL here in South Africa, the extreme slowness of it + the 3 gig cap. In Norway you can order pizza and get broadband with it (yes) the same night. I ordered DSL for home a month ago now, and havent heard a word. Installing ADSL here for others i get sick from seeing the slow response times and low int. throughput. Just checking some Norwegian pages i can see that you can e.g. get 3mbit for 850 R a month, and 8mbit for 1300. I also checked for fun what is going on with probably the best internet provider in the world, BBB. They are launching 100mbit internet in Sweden in 2004 (probably abit more expensive than their 10mbit which is 320 R a month) with a 300 GB cap pr. month.

Ok, either you are smoking something really strong (and illegal) or Telkom is not as advanced as they claim they are. I tend to believe the latter. 100mbit internet? I mean that is just a joke here, yet we are told how far advanced Telkom is with their technology - that they can't even put a cap on just the international traffic for ADSL users... or maybe they just don't care.

The last time I checked, we were in the year 2004.
What year is Telkom in?

And thus the world goes forward while Telkom (and SA as a result) stands willingly still and looks on as the rest of the world disappears into the future. [V]

The world gets a faster growing economy and better technology while SA gets increased telecom prices.

No, I'm sorry, but Japan ranks number 1. 100 Mbps fiber is cheaper than 10 Mbps VDSL in South Korea.

I get 10 Mbps for R280. And this is big Canada.

No. Japan's NTT cable offers 100/100 Mb fiber for $40 per month, with no cap. I'm sorry, Sweden can just not reach Japan's level of technology at his point.

Aha. Thanks for that :) Is it 10mbit in/out too?
I knew about Japans 100mbit before, but didnt know the price. Is the 100mbit readily available around Japan? Thats the whole point really.

Whos no1? = S.Korea. No point with 100mbit if so few can get it.
 
Yes, the 100 Mbps is available to around 80% of the population.

My upload is only 1 Mb.
