Not a small upgrade

There's also a special red version of the 4GB player that contributes to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
And as of today also available in 8gb. :)

Wonder if red isnt going to be a new option for other devices. MacBook Red™ anyone? :D

... and still no FM radio!

I'm eagerly awaiting Microsoft's Zune (which has a FM radio). I have a first gen Nano and miss the FM radio to catch-up on sport, news and talk-radio on the move.

I suppose its got nothing to do with "home-taping" then:D

I think that going back to the "mini" look is a bit of a disaster. I got a 2GB for my mom and I don't like the feel at all, particularly the plastic top.. looks and feels cheap.

They are also missing the ability to use "large fonts", while the screen is a lot brighter and sharper than the 1G nano... its still pretty fine print for older eyes.

Why dont you just buy the FM radio for it nano?

Correct me if I'm wrong but you bought the nano in the first place knowing there wasn't a fm radio built-in - getting the accessory makes sense. :)

to hang with the nano, the soon to be released Nokia N95 (a guy I know at one of the SP's mention possible release late Jan), will cope with everything and the dogs breakfast. and best of all, when the battery gives up the ghost, I pop out the old one and pop in the new one.

the IPod is cool looking and damn the size is nice, what I dislike is the proprietry format it stores files in and when the battery goes the cost and difficulty replacing it.

D

I'm not sure what you mean? Obviously you dont mean actual file format (as it plays mp3's aac's, wav's and aiff as well as protected aac's and apple lossless) so is it the directory structure you dont like?

Many, including me, would argue it's close integration with iTunes - which leads to that messy directory structuring - readily allows for one of it's strongest features - playlists. However, no one is forcing you to use it as there are alternatives.

That accessory costs R500. Is it fair to charge that much for a FM receiver these days? No way. And then it dangles on the iPod which I don't like. What will it take Apple to include a radio in the unit itself? Surely a lot less than R500 - but then it's a nice extra income generator for them. I was hoping an upgraded Nano will have this - but no - Apple will only respond when the competition (read Microsoft) evetually forces them to.

ROFL. Nice one - brightened up my morning.

Now seriously - if you already have a nano and you want fm radio r500 is a lot cheaper than a zune is ever going to be even when/if it reaches our shores.

I used to own a 3G 40GB iPod, back in 2003, just after it came out in the States, bought it on Ebay and all. I've been using it and although I bought
my mother another 3rd Gen 40GB later in 2003 and my girlfriend
a 4GB Nano earlier in this year, I personally have started to use
my Creative Zen Vision. It has a 640by480 LCD display, it plays
virtually all AVI and MPEG4 formats (xVid, DivX, MPEG2), it
has a radio I never use and it has a 30GB HDD. The most important thing however is that it beats the iPod in sound quality, even with cheap
Sennheiser phones. The Zune is a waste. If you want to copy
DRMed music from player to player and watch movies on a low res screen
it's for you, if you want a portable video player right now, Creative Zen Vision is it, the extended battery gives 6 hours of video playback.

The Zune is an upgrade from a Nano in every sense. It's not comparable to a Nano with radio add-on. Zune plays video and has plenty of GB's. It may only hit our shores next year through local retailers - but getting one in from the States should be easy enough. And a USB connection is a USB connection - everywhere.

I do like the Creative Vision M also - but I've read somewhere recently that Creative is pulled under by very poor sales in the "MP3 player" market - and may quit this market soon. So future support may become an issue. Local retailers are alreay few and far between.

I'm a Microsoft fan :-)

Well of course the zune is a different product range - you should be trying to compare it with the iPod Video instead.

No worries - nobody is perfect. ;)

Yea, lose your music collection on your PC and try to recover it from an IPod with itunes... unless they've sorted that problem out.

BTW, the Nokia's support playlists... even my old 6230 does and their not wonky directory structure to worry about. Apple created this convoluted way of storing files to make the music industry happy as I'm sure Microsoft has done in the Zune.

I want to use the thing as a mass storage device, plug the USB into the car and let it play directly from the radio through it's USB port (see the Wharfedale radios), I'm sure it's not long till we start to see several vehicles sporting USB ports on them and the apple IPods still going to need an interface to hook up to the car because they're once again non-standard due to their interface.

Yeah - they sorted that one out with the latest iTunes.

Mass storage device? Even my old iPod offers that - I currently have 18gb of backups on it and have on occasion used it as a boot disk so I'm really not following you.

There are so many new cars already coming out with iPod support fresh out of the factory that it doesnt matter what interface they use as long as it works. :)
