Not Letting A Phone Fully Charge?

Hi,if I do not let a phone fully charge does it damage the battery or have a negative impact on the phone?.....basically if I don't let it reach 100% and dis-charge it,it won't damage anything?

Batteries should last at least 2 years without taking any "special" precautions and without losing significant capacity. Also remember batteries will naturally decay over time. Don't expect a 1 year old battery to retain 100% of it's capacity.

Your first and last sentences contradict each other.
 
Keep your phone as charged up as possible, but don't break your neck over it. Don't overcharge it though and don't leave it plugged in overnight.
It's fine if you pull it out before it has reached 100%.

So where's these brilliant mobile dev's solution for this stuff?

Honestly I always find it weird that people build the most intrusive annoying pieces of garbage bloatware *Coughs "Bixby" coughs* but android still doesn't consider human nature and simply stops charging the phone and at least warning when the battery drops below a certain threshold.
 
The problem with the principle of not leaving the phone plugged in overnight is that any phone dock/charging stand cannot be considered. I'm pretty sure the charging circuitry in most phones will not allow for an 'overcharge' or excessive heat build up.
 
If I lived my life with manageable stress and a good diet, I would still expect to get old, slow and half blind and deaf, and die one day. I wouldn't expect to die at 60 though.
True, and I get what you're saying. But if you're expecting to lose some capacity then surely there is merit in looking after the battery in order to minimise the capacity loss?

I agree. Both my phone and laptop have an indicator to show that the device is charging. It blinks off once charge is complete and I assume the device is no longer charging. I have always charged both overnight and have never noticed a degrade up to upgrade time.
 
Let it charge to full and keep it plugged in. Your phone will be fine.

Why would I want to not keep it charging whenever possible? :wtf: As far as I can tell ten x 10% discharges still equals one cycle.

It's not possible to overcharge a modern phone. The charging circuitry is all inside the phone, that thing you plug in isn't actually a charger, it's just a power supply.

Leaving it plugged in when it's reached 100% isn't optimum but it's not the end of the world either. IMO, it is less of a hassle to charge your phone overnight than it is to get up at 11:30 when it's finished, unplug it, put it on flight mode, or whatever other anal things you'd need to do to optimise your battery life.

Not 100% sure what you mean here but recent smartphones are actually getting pretty clever. In Android's defence, this is a manufacturer-specific thing, as Google can't really write the software for Samsung or Motorola or LG's phones. The OEMs need to do that.

I think the Sonys for one thing if you plug them in overnight, charge to 80% then stop. Then when it's just before wake-up time (the phone quickly figures out when you start using it in the morning) it does the next 20%. I suspect the other manufacturers do something similar.

Correct. The circuitry won't allow for overcharging. In principle it's not good to keep the battery at 100% for extended periods of time (or so I've been led to believe).

But for what it's worth: I have a 2nd-gen Moto G, with a ~2000 mAh battery, and I leave the phone charging overnight, every night, and use it (light-to-medium user). In another month it'll be 3 years old and its (non-replaceable) battery still has enough charge to last a day, plus a bit more, on the odd occasions that I do forget to charge it. I can sometimes go a whole weekend without charging.

So the take-away from this is, as long as you're not deliberately abusing your smartphone battery, you should be fine.

Quite right I believe.

A 10% charge supposedly equals 10% of a cycle. This is what I was recently told by a battery and electronics expert.

It also explains why my battery cycles on my laptop does not add up to the number of times I plugged in the power supply.
