Currently studying at university and me thinks I need to invest in a tablet :D. Now I have thought a lot about this pondering whether it is worth it and not just a nice to have. No I don't plan on buying one to play games in class but actually to take notes and view .PDFs, slides, word docs, etc, like all good students do :p (though games are a benefit when really bored outside of class).

Anyway I decided a tablet + stylus would needed for the following reasons.
  • Easy to organised electronic notes and store
  • Easier to learn during off times between lectures (I stay quite a distance from campus)
  • Much less wasteful in terms of paper used to take notes, printing and work out questions for practice (especially mathematics and physics)
  • Less cumbersome, more efficient

Anyway I have a budget of up to R 3000 currently (trying to see if I can get it to R 4000), 10" seem to be above R 4000. I can't go with second hand, though I would like to, because quotes + second hand don't go well.

Thinking of:
  • Google Nexus 7" (16 GB)
  • 10.1″ Green Onion A10 3G Dual Core 1.2Ghz (Is Green Onion reliable tablets because they are quite cheap?)
  • Onion S 9.7
  • Aniol Novo Hero II or Ainol Novo 9 Spark
  • iPad mini (16 GB) (although I am an Android fan :o, I know Apple makes quality products)
Btw do all these tablets take stylus pen input (rubber to adonit jot types?) Lastly what app can I use for note taking (Android should have some decent free note taking app? Does Apple have free note taking apps?)

Thanks Fiekus. So the tablets are Asus Google Nexus 7”, iPad mini and Samsung P3100 7” (on the links). I take it all work well with stylus pens? Which would you recommend? Seems like it comes down to iPad mini and Nexus.

If you want a tablet then go get one. I'm skeptical about the university angle. Tablets are not much good for recording lots of info fast. Slides...maybe but you can't write on them?

Havoc, I have to record a lot of notes which becomes quite cumbersome to sort and carry around if i need. You sure you can't record on slides? It isn't a major train smash as I will still have a note app opened to record info. It is primary to take notes electronically and read through lecture slides and other PDFs.

Get the Sansui and install Evernote.

For varsity notes that is only going to frustate you.
Learn to type and get a laptop. Or get a hybrid laptop/tablet.

I have the Galaxy note tablet. Love it!!! Best thing ever for note taking. Its totally not going to be in your budget though.

Taking notes on a tab is not the best idea. Very good for doing readings on / small edits. In most classes you won't be able to keep up. That being said my Tab2 is VERY good for reading Journal articles

For meetings (and the same should apply to uni) I use a Livescribe pen. It is brilliant. I cannot write properly on my Galaxy Tab 2...

Now that is a cool little toy... I do like.

I literally just tap on a word in my notes and it plays the audio from 10 seconds prior, so I can take very short-hand notes now and focus more of my attention on the meeting itself. It also OCRs the text and converts to Word, excel (if I draw a rough chart, for example), pdfs, and I can export all notes into interactive PDFs with audio synced. It is the best purchase I've made in ages...

That could be incredibly useful for me as well.

Think I might have to get the company to scrounge up the petty cash for one to "test"
