Some of you may have seen my previous thread on the new VAIO Z-series, for which I need to wait a few weeks.

Given the good ideas that surfaced from this forum before, how about some suggestions for a notebook in the price range of R22-25K. The things that I consider important is:
1. Stylish looks and lightweight
2. Screen size of no more than 13"
3. Fast processor from the i range (i5 or even better i7)
4. SSD
5. Embedded 3G
6. RAM of 6Gb or more
7. Discreet graphics ( I watch a lot of 1080p movies while travelling)
8. Reasonable battery life

Any suggestions? Its difficult to beat the looks and stylishness of the VAIO, but given its availability I might be forced to look at other options.

LOL....

Just get a Macbook Pro i7 13", upgrade RAM and slap in an SSD... should easily set you back R25K.

why do you need to wait a few weeks, the Vaio z is readily available?

Guys, herewith responses:

1. 13" screen is a comfortable size in the plane in business class without becoming uncomfortable.
2. 1080p can be watched on 13", it is the quality of the movies I am after. 1080p provides a better viewing experience.
3. Alienware notebooks are nice but waaaayy too heavy and large
4. New VAIO Z with SSD's in RAID 0 and embedded 3G only ships to SA in 3-4 weeks time according to Sony SA
5. Of course they put i7's in 13" laptops. Refer VAIO-VPCZ139.
6. The Macbook sounds like an idea, what about the new Macbook Air?

You can look at the Dell XPS laptops too, but the smallest size they come in are 14"

get your sony z from overseas with international warranty, they barely weigh 1kg, better than lugging these monster laptops around that weigh 5 tons.

But then you could get it next week, I work out that it would land at around R19,500 for the VPCZ137GX/B model.

MacBook air = old Core2Duo... SSD, Battery and RAM all soldered onto mainboard. No way to change or upgrade.

EDIT : Sony Online shopping... wootware... my bad... 16" - scrap it.

I would defintley get the MacBook Pro 15" if that's not too big or possibly the new MacBook Air 13".

The reason the 15" MacBook Pro is better is because it has the i7, 8Gb RAM and the SSD in 512Gb and that top one has 512Mb on the video card. Here is the thing, the design is so slim and lightweight it may be worth the bigger screen size.

The Air has Core2Duo, 4Gb RAM but higher res because it's new.

The only thing I can see that is not there is the integrated 3G and I agree that's much better than a stupid dongle. I would still by the Mac. They're just so much easier to use.

Plus, if you travel a lot then get it overseas and with your budget you will be able to get the top of the range and still buy loads of cool stuff to go with your new toy ;)

Where do you travel? I reccomend New York!

That Sony VAIO really looks like laptop closest to your specifications, but it is damn expensive to say the least.

You get older (Core2Duo) Dell XPS 13.3" laptops, where as the newer XPS ones are 14" and I haven't seen one in SA yet.

My preference would be to get 2 laptops: one high spec'd one with a 17" screen for doing work and a netbook for traveling.
My dad is using a setup almost like that, but instead of a netbook he's using an iPad 3G.

What's the reason for such a high-end 13" laptop and not and entry level one?
