Notebook manufacturer support stories.

Eight of us here at work use Sony VAIO notebooks. Three of us have FE-28GP (not made anymore) and the rest have FE-38GP (Core 2 Duo T2700). All of them are still going strong.

As far as I know the official repair company for them here in Cape Town are Rectron.

Saw the other night on the news that the ****er from Fidentia also uses (used?) one. :D

Sony laptops suck @55

The CEO here has 2 Sony laptops.

VGN-T37GP
VGN-T37OP

The new one lasted 3 weeks until the CPU fan crapped out and we had to wait 3 weeks for a new one from Singapore. His old one has crapped out now too, sound not working. Unfortunately it's out of warranty and needs a new mobo which was quoted at R6200-00 + Vat. Also 3 weeks for the part to get here.

Utter rubbish

Funny that we've had ours for more than a year now and no problems so far. :o

I personally like HP laptops!

Bought a HP laptop the other day, it started with BSOD's 2 days later and HP immediately gave me a new laptop, actually they took my laptop and gave me a new laptop in sealed box (with the charger recovery CD's and all that stuff), so score for me, now I've got spares galore :D

Don't much like Dell to be honest but I don't have any experience concerning them except for their horrible! desktops which I avoid like plague. But many people have said that their Laptops aren't bad.

Oh yes, if you go for Acer make sure you request the extra 2 year guarantee. It's about a thousand rand If I remember correctly but there is no substitute for peace of mind.
Yup, I didn't even think twice. Just remember that you must register that extra 2 year guarantee within the 1st year after you purchased the laptop otherwise it's worthless.

First year eh?

This is an issue I am currently having with Acer, after I bought my laptop they told me I can renew within 6 months, then later I sent it for repair (while it was under warranty) and I had it fixed, I enquired again about the warranty and I was told 1 year, "Phew!", I thought, lucky they extended it.. then when I phoned to extend warranty/find out how to do it I was told by the rep who confirmed (apparently) with his manager that I was too late, I had to have done it in 3 months after purchase. So I lost out of extending my warranty because they gave me misinformation.

I am about to throw my laptop through their window.

When you buy the extended AcerAdvantage warranty, you get a booklet and activation codes in a CD holder. The booklet clearly indicates the steps you must take to register. You simply go to the AcerAdvantage website, register, activate, print and mail the document off to the address provided.

As for the 3 month vs 1 year issue you currently have with Acer, I don't understand what the problem is because it clearly states in the AcerAdvantage booklet that you can register within the first year, it mentions it on page 1 and 3. No confusion there.

So if some rep provided you with the wrong information, it doesn't really matter because if it appears in their printed official warranty manual in black and white that you can register within 1 year, then it will be the easiest thing in the world to prove it! Just show your AcerAdvantage booklet to anybody at Acer and off you go. In fact, just go ahead and register/activate it online anyway. I don't understand what the problem is, I assume you have the AcerAdvantage booklet and activation codes? If you don't have it, then what warranty did you purchase and from whom....? :)

I didn't buy any extended warrany when I purchased the unit, I was under the impression that you did that at a later state, through Acer. And when I phoned and enquired that was when the crap started, so the time when they told me 3 months I was "oh frakit" and I didn't bothered because (by what I learnt from them) I was too late.

OK, so HP are not officially the Idiots of the West!

After complaining that I didn't want to send the whole laptop back to them for a week and being told that the only way they would replace the power brick was if I sent everything back, I get it back from them today with a note saying they tested the laptop, couldn't find anything wrong with it so the call has been resolved. No replacement power brick because they didn't even look at it. IDIOTS!!!!! Now I know why I shouldn;t have sent the whole laptop in when there was nothing wrong with it, because you're a bunch of Morons who don't know your arses from your elbows!

Haha, ouch.

My next notebook will have business on-site warranty, to avoid this sort of thing.

I don't know about you guys but I find LG to have excellent notebook support. I know they are a bit more expensive but it's worth it if the service is good.

I sold quite a few now and if they have problems (2 so far), they fix it the same day.

I like the look of the LG's but I've never seen one in the flesh. How does their warranty and support system work? ie: where does it go, do they fetch, tc; etc;

i recommend compaq (hp).

i've had a compaq notebook for about two years now and only had one issue (hdd crash) while it was still under warranty.

support told me over the phone to bring it in on a certain day (when they would have stock), he replaced the hdd while I waited.

Well just from the company i work for's perspective. Company used HP [thus all laptops bought by the company was HPs etc] , then company switched very quickly to Dell...reason being? HP's support and service were crap and they pissed off the CEO one too many times. So now i am on a company Dell, and from what i can see when other people's laptops pack up, Dell is fixing it in record time.
