My brother wants to get himself 3g/hsdpa

either usb or pcmcia.

i've fitted my e620 red card in his laptop - no problems.

which card/device gives better receiption (and those with external antennas)

i'm looking at 3 specific models

-the red card with the part where the red antenna folds upwards
-red card (e620)
-white usb one - use maybe a usb extension cable?

any recommendation - if needed - buy a proper high gain antenna.

but my question is for as purchased package - which is best?
thx

Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem considering that the notebook doesn't have an Express Card slot.

If you have no problems with your e620 and you get a good signal then why not buy another one. It's better than buying a different product and then finding you have problems.

The E620 only goes up to 1.8Mbits/s, whereas the E220 supports 3.6Mbits/s which will be available when Telkodemonopolies stops giving Vodacom grief.

@[OUPA]MrNutz, if your brother intends to get a new notebook anytime soon, then he should definitely not get a PCMCIA data card - most new notebooks only have an Express Card slot and not PCMCIA, i.e. don't get the E620.

Also, it is possible to use an Express Card HSDPA modem in a PCMCIA slot which is larger than the Express Card slot, but an adapter is required and these ExpressCard->PCMCIA adapters seem to be rather difficult to get hold of.

The E220 is also very portable, just plug it into and XP machine and it'll set itself and an be ready to go in minutes!

An extension USB cable is worth having so you can find the best position for signal...

I have an Option GT 3.6 Max that I am very happy with. It is 3.6 ready and will support 7.2 when it becomes available with a firmware upgrade. While PC Express might be taking over from PCMCIA, my brand new Dell has both ports. So it really depends what notebook you buy. I like this card because it is almost flush with the notebook so I don't have to take it out when I bag it.

It would not be good to buy a 'non-3.6-ready' card at this point in time, so listen to ic, as always he gives good advise.

morkhans, I know you've had really bad throughput recently but what's the best you've seen with your 3.6 card?

Well , where i can buy is rather limited.

Its the Nashua shop or Incredible connection directly next to each other in local mall . Thus at the moment it looks like the e220 usb.

I have seen close on 1.8 on the Vodacom speed test, so maybe I should get you to stick your "special" SIM in and see what it can do. ;)

Bring it around!

Groovy. I will give you a call :)

PS. My most recent speed test (today):
Download Speed: 1860 kbps (232.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 264 kbps (33 KB/sec transfer rate)

I did however have to disconnect and reconnect first due to throughput issues (I appear connected, but can't resolve DNS names / access sites).
