I have a friend who's getting a new notebook and says I could have his for R350, to me this looks like a good deal, the notebook isn't damaged or anything but need your guys opinion if I should do this. I would have to buy a new battery as it doesn't even turn on without an external power source. It has a 2 GHz celeron CPU, only 128 ram (hopefully I can upgrade that, it runs XP really slow), 20GB HDD, it has a built in webcam but it doesn't work ATM as he lost the drivers for it. I don't know what brand it is, it just says notebook in a circle on the top. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance

Model number?
Battery, only replace it if you want it mobile (+_R700-R1300) else just run it off the PSU.
Memory...eish, the celeron laptop either use PC133 (almost imposible to find, max 512mb) or DDR400 (Max 1gb). got sum ddr400 @ www.pcint.co.za

Thats what I was thinking, would ubuntu run with only 128mb? I want to know how much a battery and atleat an extra 512mb ram would cost. . .

EDIT: I see the battery will be to much, I'd rather just spend the cash on ram. I don't know the model number. How much would you expect to pay for this notebook if you didn't know the guy?

EDIT2: How can I check what type of ram it uses?

I am running Ubuntu 8.04.1 with full compiz fusion on:
Pentium 3 450MHz
196MB RAM
GeForce 4 MX440 64MB

It runs fine, but under certain circumstances (VNC'ing in, MythTV, etc), it slows down quite substantially.

That notebook should run Ubuntu fine, with a bit more RAM.

Use CPU-Z to check what RAM you're using.

I wouldn't pay more than R350-00

Ok, I'll check what ram it's using. I'm not getting ripped off though?
Should I just let them send Ubuntu to me, I don't have enough bandwidth to DL it

Look for your nearest toaster? Or get it from a university? Or get WebAfrica 1GB local for R19 and download it?

I'm using 3G

Then locate a toaster... :

OK, thanks I'll PM you when I actually get it, do you know if this would be able to support C&C red alert 1/2 ? And if Ubuntu supports it?
