I have been asked to organise 3 notebooks for my company.

All three are for engineers who travel quite a bit but work with engineering programs and CAD quite a lot.
Requirements as I have identified :

- 17" full HD res screen (1080p)
- 6Gb 1333 mhz RAM
- i5 or better processor (to handle rendering and large image files)
- dedicated GPU with around 1Gb of ram

They will not be necessarily used for 3D renderring, rather large image work and lots of simulation programs that require processing power more than graphics capabilities.

Budget is around R12k each and I am hoping if we buy three somewhere we could get some quite nice machines.

any ideas?

I am battling to find anything but HUGE machines for around the R25k mark when I look at 17" screens

Rectron machines could be a big help as I might be able to get a good price through a rectron retailer

thanks in advance

Your main problem finding a laptop at that price is the fullhd requirement. Laptops that have 1080p are > R12000.
Try go through a friend or company that has supplier contacts. You can get a decent Dell V3750 17" Core I7, 6gb memory, 750gb drive, Nvidia gefore 524m 1Gb card, 17" screen (1600x900 wled), windows 7 pro for around R12000.

I have received a number of options from a few suppliers... Best so far I think is this : Dell vostro
Any other options you can think of?
they can do that for around R11400 each incl vat and postage

You can get the Dell XPS 15z & XPS 17 in Full HD 1920x1080 as an optional extra when ordering.

Do they really need 17" laptops as those things are a biatch to lug around.

The reason I was keen on 17" full HD is because working with large CAD drawings extra screen space would be super helpful...
I have actually looked at the XPS series... both 15 and 17... Will see what the boss says today

Your budget is a bit too low for proper workstation laptops.

You would probably need to spend at least R15-20k.

Have a look at the HP Elitebook workstations and Dell Precision Workstation.
