Hi,

My friend is planning on getting a new laptop. His budget is roughly R6500.00 and he's going to use it mostly for gaming and writing the occasional quote / surfing the net etc.

What should he get?

Obviously he will get whatever he buys downgraded to XP Pro - unless there is a reason he should keep Vista?

Keep Vista. As bad as it seems, with some tweaking you can actually run Vista quite efficiently. Unfortunately, Vista requires more Ram than XP, so its a toss up to decide if you want to spend the money you would have spent on xp on extra ram or just downgrade. Downgrade is never an option in my humble opinion, and face it, we are stuck with Vista, so best get used to it.

duly noted...

so then what could he get for R6500? I guess he'd have to go for 4gb mem, can you even get a laptop for 6.5k that has 4gb mem?

Well the first problem there is I don't usually see gaming and laptop in the same sentence.

ok ok, but he really wants a laptop... he doesnt have space for a desktop, and needs something portable for lan gaming and the bit of work he will do on the laptop.

I would seriously rather consider a desktop get a lcd monitor. Seriously 6.5k won't get you a gaming laptop.

duly noted, he's not looking for a "gaming laptop" just a laptop for about 6500 that can play some of the newer games.

well... honestly, 6.5k won't get you anything more then a chappie bro. For a lappy that can play games, you looking at around R10k-R12k, lappies what play games well, those cost around 20k+

maybe buy a desktop with an LCD and a small-ish case. Hell.. for 6.5k he can get a decent pc able to play crysis with no lag at around medium-high! a lappy that HAS a graphics card will MAYBE get to play crysis on low, at a sad res.

Well if you have to go for a laptop then have a look at pc zone if u have to. www.zones.co.za thats most probably the best you'd get

i totally agree that a desktop is the way to go unless you have 30k odd laying about to spend on an Alienware monster notebook from gamer heaven...

all these things considered...

Thats what I ment, exactly.

Agreed on this case. My laptop that I use for work, set me back R6k and it came with only 1gb of ram and I won't even attempt to install anything remotely modern on it. Oh, and it supports only a maximum of 2gb RAM, same as a lot of machines in that price range. Rather go for a desktop with a small case.

right then...

if he got a palm-top with excel, word and outlook on it, and a desktop... that might work out for him

So it's not just me, if you only have 6.5k and want to play games stick to a desktop

6.5k won't get you half a gaming laptop... :(
I agree with everyone else, 6.5k will get you a decent desktop.

Portability of a lappy is nice but if you want it to do anything more than surfing & documents, be prepared to spend 20k
