Nothing detects HDD

I was cleaning out my place and came across a 1TB and a 500GB HDD lyting around, which I decided to sell as I don't need more space right now.

The 1TB works and everything is great (in classads if anyone ken ;) - but nothing detects the 500GB. I have Windows 7 64 bit and nothing. I tried the manage computer in Windows too. I tried then tried UEFI BIOS ... nothing .... and downloaded Seagate tools but again, nothing. The disk does spin when it's on (I feel it vibrate).

Is it gone - or is there anything I can try?

Sounds like the board could be dead. Can you see it in the bios at all?

If it spins up then it's not the PCB.

As ponder says if it's a 7200.11 series with SD15 firmware it could well be the bug. If not, could be any other number of hardware of firmware faults.

There's a good chance the bug is the cause.

If you want we'd be happy to resolve it for you at no cost (providing it is the bug, and only that).

I'm just scared of what is on it.

Do big magnets damage data?

No. Even if it does, it would also destroy firmware area which is stored on platters, effectively bricking device so no point of using magnets. :)
However big magnet is able to pull heads out of parking area causing damage media/heads on the next power on. You don't want do it either. :)

You'll see the drive is not being picked up anything and most likely the firmware issue.

The average price of a 500GB is R250 and if I get the cable for R100 that is R150 I'd get from it if sold. Plus the work and time involved - and according to the thread you could damage the drive further and brick it ... so I may only pay and get nothing back

The data is not important to me - but I'd be hesitant giving the info to someone else.

Not sure where you get your hard drives from but if I had to get one it would cost me R679, and that's excluding the shipping.

Southbit already offered to sort out the problem for you for free, all you would have to do is pay for the courier or postage, which to me is more than worth it.

If I was in SA I would buy the drive from you.

Used price ... what I'd sell it for being a used drive.

He did offer - and I appreciate the fact - but buying cables, travelling, couriering etc costs money and time. In the end the problem is fixed after all the trouble and I get 2 Steer burgers 'profit' ... I'm not rich - but I'd rather not go the effort for R150.00

I'll PM kimbo, as I have a 1TB that I can do something on

EDIT : He's sorted :)

If you are in JHB area I can do it for free. If it is not "Fly CC" bug and you can trust me, you can leave HDD with me, I would like do some experiments on this model. :)
