Then if I am lucky I can re-insert the card and I hear the 2 chimes again and I can browse once more. If I am not lucky I will hear only one chime and then I have to restart the PC because VMC does not want to know a thing about detecting the card, if I am extremely unlucky the PC freezes there and then upon insertion of the card.

Another fact to mention is that if I insert the card and I only hear the 1 chime and try to restart, the PC freezes on the 'Windows is shutting down' message. I run Windows XP Pro SP 2.

Does sound like a USB compatibility issue. If you have USB issues, it's probably a good idea to first try and resolve those.

What model PC / Laptop?

When last did you do a BIOS update? A number of forumites have reported more stable USB connections after upgrading the system BIOS.

I will check the USB settings, I have the most current BIOS update (I flashed it a long time ago, no updates since then) and I have a self constructed PC, I will give you the names, makes, models of the components if you want.

ic, in the event logs I get a lot of errors when it comes to retrieving data from the net, this one happens a few times, and it seems it is the one that happens when my PC crashes:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Tcpip
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4226
Date: 2006/06/18
Time: 05:24:19 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SHAUN
Description:
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.

These ones are a lot more common and happen every time the downlink gets lost:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: W32Time
Event Category: None
Event ID: 17
Date: 2006/06/18
Time: 05:25:59 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SHAUN
Description:
Time Provider NtpClient: An error occurred during DNS lookup of the manually configured peer 'time.windows.com,0x1'. NtpClient will try the DNS lookup again in 15 minutes. The error was: A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host. (0x80072751)

I found a USB Host Controller that didn't have its drivers installed properly. I installed them so no we will have to see what happens.

Nope, I have no extensions installed whatsoever, there is nothing interfering with my internet connection apart from ZoneAlarm.

Ok, I just lost my downlink at 2:15pm but no events were logged at all since the event that was logged showing that I established a connection. I am beginning to think that those error logs I posted have nothing to do with the loss of the downlink :(

[Edit]
Lost my downlink again at 2:38pm

When you say, you lost your down-link, exactly what happened?

Were you still connected and could send packets out but got nothing back, or were you disconnected and had to re-connect?

Have you tried a 3G-Only and a GPRS-Only profile?

You're using a desktop PC, right? What card carrier do you have to plug the data card into? Have you checked for the latest drivers for this adaptor card?

@v3g, do the Novatel drivers do any event or error logging, if so how can one enable it, or is there a debug version available that might shed some light on this whole problem - not that Deiphos should have to debug the s/w, but it might help get this problem sorted...

I am using a Sunix PCI to PC Card adaptor, in the device manager it says it is manufactured by RICOH.

When I say I loose my downlink I mean I can still see the connection icon in the sysem tray, and both screens are flashing, plus NetMeter shows me sending data and receiving the odd packet back, but after a few seconds nothing comes back and the card is just sending all the time.

I am permanantly running on the 3G only profile. I once tried the GPRS Only profile, but it was way too slow for anything to happen, it said data was being transferred at 7kB/s, but nothing was happening in the browser.

At least now that I sorted the USB problem the PC doesn't crash anymore :D

Lost my downlink at 8:12am again this morning.
I am hopefully going to swap out my HSDPA card for a 3G one today, so if I am lucky today will be my last day with all these hassles.

Hi guys I know I'm in the Vodacom side (I have MTN), I have a similar issues keep getting usb device not recognised. I have U740 on MTN hsdpa package.

I connect and after a few minutes get 2 chimes and then USB device not recognised, I have had everyone looking at it and unfortunately at wits end, I have elan P111 PCMCia card and U740, everyone else seems ok but I am stuck. And my card does not seem to know that it can go faster its stuck at 237kps, but when I use the card in a laptop I have HSDPA without a problem.

I have been able to seemingly trace the problem to the data interface, when the card loads up in windows, that is the one area seemingly causing the problem. I also found the that the phoenix modem drivers seem to be causing the system to hang, they are inluded in the mobilink installation.????
