Experiencing the following intermittent problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad with Vista SP1:

  1. Insert modem in USB port, instead of VMC Lite the autoplay install pops up
  2. If you press cancel, nothing else happens, no icon in taskbar
  3. Click OK for install, the installer can't find the software
  4. Exit installer error and VMC Lite runs, but cannot find any connection devices
  5. Problem is intermittent, sometimes it activates and connects properly after re-inserting
The help desk advice is to uninstall, remove device drivers, clean registry and reinstall. Anyone encountered the same problem or got a solution?

Sounds like some other application is probably trying to access the CD-ROM drive emulated by the VMC.

Disable any application that uses the CD/DVD-ROM(like Nero or NTI or Deamon Tools) and maybe your Anti-Virus too.

Try completely disabling your startup and rebooting. Then try again.

You can also try and change the Drive Letter in Device Manager -> Disk Management, associated to the CD-ROM drive of the Modem.

Thanks Iam3g, will try it when the client is back next week. Seems like the underlying problem is that the OS does not identify the device properly, therefore it tries to reinstall the drivers? Intermittent also means that I get intermittent calls from a frustrated client at odd hours :-/

Hi All

I'm experiencing a different problem with my Novatel MC950D HSDPA modem.
Everything seems to work fine, installation was successful, connecting to the internet fine, getting download speeds around 1.8Mbps and upload speed of 340Kbps which is typical HSDPA speeds. (I have not signed up for HSDPA 3.6 yet)

My only problem is that my Email is not working. I have a hotmail account and use Windows Live Mail Desktop client as my primary email client.

I get the following error when I click send/receive:

Windows Live Mail could not download the requested message. To send and receive
messages in your Hotmail account, go to http://hotmail.live.com on the Web, or try
again later. To get help from Windows Live Customer Support, go to
http://support.live.com and click Windows Live Mail in the list of services.

Subject 'Nuwe kombuis kaste!!'
Server Error: 0x8000FFFF
Server: 'http://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync_v2.0.0/Sync.aspx'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x8000FFFF

I've googled the web and couldnt find any solution, even though there are hundreds of people experiencing the same problem.

What confuses me is that when I connect to the internet using my Samsung U700 via USB, Windows Live Mail works fine.

So after hours of investigation i've found the following differences between the 2 types of connections:

Novatel Modem: Extra Initialization Setting = AT+CGDCONT=16,"IP","internet";
Phone Number: *99***16#

Samsung CDMA Modem: Extra Initialization Setting = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internetVPN";
Phone Number: *99**1*1#

I changed the Samsung's settings to that of the Novatel's, and got the exact same error when checking my email. So I think it is safe to say that the problem lies in these settings.

The problem is that I can't change these settings for the Novatel modem. Whenever I change it, and connect the modem, it automatically defaults back to the original settings.

How can I permanantly change the Novatel's extra initialization settings as well as the phone number it dials to make a connection, or is there something that Vodacom must activate for the Novatel to function properly with it's default settings?

There must be a solution for this problem ....

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Try creating just a manual Windows Dial-up connection, set the number and the Initialization setting, and use that without the Software.

Hi there Iam3G,

I manually created a dialup connection, changed the settings and connected without the software, but still i can't open new messages in Windows Live Mail. It only downloads the message headers but when I click on it I get the same error.

Anything else I can try?

Did you change the Initialization String to the same as your Samsung's?

The Initialization String was exactly the same, but it turned out that VPN wasn't active on my new SIM. Contacted 155 and they activated InternetVPN service and now Windows Live Mail is working fine.

So how do I get the Vodafone software to point to the correct modem settings and dialup number?

Thank you very much for your help thus far. Much appreciated..

You cant. The settings are built into the Vodafone Software, so everytime you click the connect button, it creates a dial-up connection with those predefined settings, or re-modifies the existing connection it created(if you edited it like you did).

The only thing you can set in the Software is the APN, so open the Dashboard, click Settings ->> APN --> Manual APN Settings and enter internervpn in the box provided and see if it works the same.

On a similar theme, how can I use the Novatel MC950D with other networks? Is there 3rd party software for it like the Huawei series. I know you can just go and do it manually with 'connect to' and then put the settings in manually, but you lose the data counters and the ability to choose HSDPA/3g etc..

There is supposed to be some software called Mobilink but I cant find it.

Oh SNAP !!!!!!!! Iam3G you are THE MAN (unless u a woman - heheh)
Adding the internetvpn setting to the dashboard's Manual APN setting seems to have fixed my problem ....

Thanx for all your help, I really appreciate it...

MUCH RESPECT!!!!!!!!!
