I believe that the death penalty is a necessary deterrent and certainly needed in SA, but not sure if it's the best thing in this case.

November execution date set for D.C. sniper
updated 3 hours, 31 minutes ago

A November 10 execution date was set Wednesday for John Allen Muhammad, convicted in a series of sniper-style shootings that terrorized the Washington area in 2002.

Muhammad, 48, was convicted in the murder of Dean Harold Meyers at a Manassas, Virginia, gas station. Meyers was killed by a single bullet, which became the signature of the two-person sniper team.

Death penalty is I think wrong but if it can save innocent peoples' lives and the process is fair and includes numerous appeals and only the worst criminals are sentenced - who knows. Yet I do think it's morally wrong.

What if in this case the murderer welcomes the death penalty claiming martyrdom?

I think the jews said it best. In a civilised society there is no place for the capital punishement. When I think about SA we definately do not live in a civilised society. Either way I'm against capital punishment. The USA is also a rough place.

Am i the only who think the death penalty though should happen sooner? I mean some people sit on death row for 10+ years.

Damn man why does it take so long? Why is it such a process, last meal, get the family to come watch.

Frankie strap a pig to him and electrocute the Fuqer, kill the pig though before hand because there is no reason the pig should suffer.. Is the pig something they hate and you cannot get your virgins if you die with a pig? Something like that i cannot quite remember lol.

Bringing the death penalty back won't actually be a complete deterrent.

Case in point, the state he lives in has the death penalty, it didn't deter him.

If someone wants to kill, they will.

No but remy, not everyone will do it. I am sure the violent crime will stop because right now you can kill and murder a family and more than likely get out on bail. You also know you won't do life in prison either. You also know you can pay to lose case files.

If our justice system was better and the death penalty came back i suspect violent crime stats would drop over night. There would still be plenty of crime but at least it would end well and not in death.

I don't give a flying continental whether capital punishment is a deterrent or not. Fry the bastard. No need for 3 meals a day, and zero risk of repeat offence.

the problem is even if we had the death penalty back right now its going to mean jack **** why?, to name just 3 issues:

1) police force are not up too standard
2) courts are not definitely are not what they should be
3) jails ? lol lets not go there...

in short, it will mean nothing till we have an effective conviction system that is applied without fail. if that is not addressed then having a penalty mean jack ****.

Well murder is murder and you have to stand accord to what you have done, you don't normally just take a life unwillingly without thought now do you ?

When you have taken away, then does it not stand that the same should be exacted from you?

Obviously killing the bloke is not going to replace the people he has killed, but it is surely better that way as it would save the next and the next person he would have killed, not be a handout in tax payers money and lastly it an example what will happen if you or me go out in society and just kill away.

killa, violent crime will never stop though, i agree it would be reduced, but the desperation (especially in SA) it would seem a more viable option for a criminal/psychopath

He did, but seeing that they got the death penalty on the first one they didn't see fit to continue the trials.
He was convicted of capital murder in Virginia then extradited to Maryland where he was convicted for six counts of first degree murder. There is also DC and a few more states (California, Arizona, and Texas) ready to try him should the need ever arise.

Really? He's known to have killed 16 people.
