Why wasn't this anywhere else (I don't recall seeing it), is the crime so bad in SA that major crimes like this go unanounced by the powers that be?

That is why I do not believe any "stat" from SAPS or government.

Two weeks after the Baviaanspoort prison was robbed at gunpoint, the police are no closer to catching the culprits.

And Dr Johan Burger of the institute for security studies has said this sent a negative message to the public about the safety of government institutions

“This indicates that nobody is safe. The police headquarters was broken into once, the Hawks office in Silverton has been broken into several times and laptops stolen and documents were stolen from the State Security Agency.”

Baviaanspoort prison in the east of Pretoria was robbed into Sunday 14 August.

Kameelpoort police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said: “Two assailants, driving a green City Golf, forced guards at Baviaanspoort prison to open the gates around 00:50.”

He said the men took two firearms, a cellphone and a laptop from a safe in the guardroom then fled.

The guards were not harmed during the robbery.

Shibambo said there were still no leads but appealed to the public for assistance with any information that could lead to the arrest of the men.

Record east.

how big is this prison btw? would these criminals break into somewhere like Pollsmoor?

hahaha - geesus what next? this is what happens when the balance of power swings in favour of criminals!

unlike in america where they shoot first then ask questions!

in America the criminals are the ones doing the shooting, they just have uniforms on to disguise themselves and be socially acceptable.

So lets say the criminals broke into the prison and the police arrived.

Do they try to talk the criminals to surrender and come out, or just keep them inside and allocate a new room for them......
