"Though SA’s low PC density and Internet connectivity is a concern, Barrett says the success of the cellphone industry is proof that this can be remedied quickly.
Barrett does not view the relatively high cost of buying a PC as an obstacle. Prices are constantly falling, he says."
the problems with these contracts are not the cost of the PC's, its the cost of internet access. the internet costs account for the majority of the monthly installments. when telkom started selling bundled PC's, i remember the cost of the PC itself being only 30% or so of the monthly installment and the remainder accounting for internet access. with 3G it will be even higher. these contracts are, and always will be, a total rip-off until such time that the internet access component of the installment accounts for less than the PC component
The bundled PC prices are ridiculous as well. You can get much, much more bang for your bucks if you shop around and some companies even supply credit, but the interest rate is a killer.
