Nu Metro - 3D Games

was wondering myself, do they just upscale to 3d or is it a "proper 3d" feed using 3d cameras, how do they get the feed?

Can you explain how does one upscale to 3D??

This World Cup is being shot with special 3D setups. There's no "upscaling" involved.

They're using Sony's HDC-1500 television cameras in stereoscopic setups, and Sony EX3's in stereoscopic setups for the mobile steadicams.

Note the image below, the main camera pointing forward, and the other camera above, pointing downward near the main camera's lens. They use a special prism setup.

Interesting thanks for posting, I think they were referring to the up-scaling in resolution and not making a 2d image 3d....

As already mentioned, this is proper 3D footage, with special dishes installed at the cinemas, as well as special receivers/decoders for these live feeds (VERY expensive kit).

Read on a blog.
The guy was disappointed cos tickets were R100 BUT the 3D glasses were extra R15.
His biggest complaint was that there was no commentary at all...

So has anybody posting in this thread actually been to a game at the cinema yet? 25 responses and I haven't seen a response along those lines yet.

So we've established that it's a bit pricey but it is an actual live feed of real 3D footage which is expensive. Well done.

SOOOOOOO, anyone actually been to a match yet - anyone with some feedback, please?

Went to see the brazil vs ivory coast game

Video 9/10
Sound 6/10

The sound is the worst part, my surround sound at home does a better job. If you're in a noisy cinema it wouldn't matter though, definitely something you have to do!

Is it something you'd pay to see again? Is it visually spectacular or more of a fad that will eventually die?

Same what I was thinking - it will be quite an effort (if possible) to make 2d into 3d footage without the source being shot in 3D, but thanks for those pics of the cameras - look as if they cost a rand or two.

Something I would do again, but not R240 like what was quoted for the final though. Has to be the right cinema aswell, the emperors screen is massive and adds to the effect

Even a Samsung 3D TV can upscale 2D HD broadcast to 3D. It shouldn't be that complicated but I haven't looked at the technical details.

I hear the problem with watching 3D football in a cinema is that the vibe is completely missing. People revert to "movie mode" and that would detract from the social aspect of watching sport. Not something I'd want to necessarily do after hearing opinions from a few mates...

thats true, but when i went there were only about 20 people in there, they did cheer when there was a goal. odd that people shut up during a football match but talk and play with their phones when there's a movie on

Went to see BRA vs CHI at Numetro 3D today. Not bad but I wouldn't call it value for money. The cameras are different from the normal TV feed and show at angles more suitable for 3D. The contrast and brightness of the image is bad. The sound is bad too. Besides, you see some shadows around the players for some unknown reason. You can't compare this to Avatar or any other 3D movie. It's OK to go see once but it's better to watch the games on HD TV.

Went and saw last nights game Brazil vs Chili... was pretty impressive ! they could have done more with the sound and when you have panning shots it goes out of focus a bit.... but hey this is 3d being viewed live ! on something like avatar they spend hours editing every frame... so in my book well worth it !
