Number Portabilitiy

Does anyone know when number portability will come into effect?
I want to move to Neotel, but want to retain my existing telephone number.

When I last contacted them about this they said only mid-to-late next year. Number portability is quiet an infrastructure nightmare (I'm in the SMS trade) and my understanding is Telkom are dragging their feet on this.

If its for business there is one important point my wife mentioned when I proposed switching here business to Neotel - what about the telephone directory listing of your number?

GNP (Geographical NP) is done and enforceable to be done within 2 months.

I however suspect this has to do with block numbers, like what you get with PRI's, and not individual numbers. Don't bargain anybody except Neotel to co-operate, they will be at the mercy of Telkom etc

GNP is available. You have to petition ICASA to order Telkom to release the numbers to NeoTel though. The process isn't very streamlined yet, but it is available and usable

You first need a CRDB to successfully port numbers...you also need a CRDB company who will manage a common number database.
This costs around R20m, then you need to have the systems in place on both sides for porting to happen. Considerable testing needs to take place before this can be launched.

As much as Telkom would like to drag its heels, it has no choice but to comply and co-operate.

A little birdie told me that work is already underway on both sides to get this up and running.
