Of course the operators dont consider it worth while. MTN and Voda never had anything to gain from it really. Thats why they stalled it as long as possible.
Only consumers and new enterprising telco's win here
It is a good thing. I've ported purely because the yellow network had a really good deal. When my 2 years are up, I will port to whichever network then has the best deal. Unless the yellow guys offer me a good deal again. I am not loyal to any network.
I've seen lately more new line offers are now available on upgrade as well. The networks must realise that if their upgrades aren't as good as new line deals, customers will port.
I ported my number middle January.
Everything went slick. SMS's, calls, the lot.
Vodacom and MTN are so big - people moving from one to another was just referred to as a "constant churn".
Each customer is just another number to milk - and people que at the local Vodashop. They do not bother to phone you when they have a handset in stock - "phone again tomorrow to check if we have received stock" = they are not bothered. The consumer wants (at all cost - they believe) to support them.
They spend millions on marketing and sponsorship - and everybody laps it up.
They still have to learn that they can retain customers with service and competitive rates.
*Choke* - still I have come across people that didn't know you can keep your number and move network.
you still have the contract?, was it renewed with a new phone for another 24month period?.. if not, then Autopage can maybe charge you a reasonable porting fee, but not R5k. The number is yours, not theirs.
