My contract with Vodacom has reached the end of its life, and I've recently set the ball rolling on porting my number from Vodacom to MTN.
I received an sms on Monday night saying "Your request to leave the Vodacom network has been approved. Please contact Vodacom Service Provider on 082 1958 to arrange the cancellation of your contract". This seemed strange to me, because MTN assured me that they would take care of everything. They also said I shouldn't call the number, etc.
Additionally, they claimed it would take a further 24 hours and the process would be complete (the contract with MTN has already been approved). 3 days on, no word, and MTN says that Vodacom has not yet approved the number port.
So I call 111 (Vodacom Customer Care) and explain my situation and ask what the next step is. I get told that I HAVE to call 082 1958 to cancel the contract.
So which is it? I understand that it's difficult for them to liaise with each other (why is beyond me) about timing the switch, but it'd be nice to have some clarity as to whether I should call the number, etc. I also understand that the cancellation of the contract is necessary, but why was I told not to do so?
If anyone has any experience with porting a number from Vodacom to MTN, please let me know what process you followed. The process I have followed so far:
1) Went to MTNSP store and decided what contract and phone I wanted. Took along all the relevant documents they needed (payslip, 3 months bank statements, ID)
2) Signed some papers to get the ball rolling
3) Waited
4) Got an sms from Vodacom saying my request to leave the network was approved
5) Contacted MTN to find out if I should call 082 1958. Got told "No"
6) Waited
7) Contacted Vodacom Customer Care and was told I HAVE to call 082 1958
