Soo a friend has a Packard Bell Gp2W with the infamous Nvidia defect.

Screen was all garbled... split the array into 6 horisontal copies and was basically unusable.

Got my hands on it... too lazy to strip the whole thing, i removed the fan heatsyncs and ram... removed the processor... shielded everything with tinfoil and proceded to cook the gpu with a heatgun.

3cm clearance off gpu for 120 seconds did the trick.

Allowed board to cool for 10 minutes.

This apparently fixes the Red ring of death on the xbox also.

I know someone posted this similar procesure on a macbook last month. But i think my repair is just easier if you know exactly which component is hassling you.

Anyone else had any success with this?

I did a reflow of a 8800GTX a couple of years ago - also for a friend - so I'm not sure how long it lasted after that though.

The 8800 was notoriously prone to artifacts. sigh.

Cool man. How long did it last for? I have been keeping an eye on this thing. Am letting it run through the night now to make sure its fixed before I return it to the owner.

As ginggs said about a year, but goes downhill from there, the second reflow lasted a couple of months and then went down to every 2 weeks until it was replaced.
