So it looks like Fermi is a whole lot better in a cut-down, redesigned, GF104 mainstream version. These cards (768MB/1GB versions) look a perfect replacement for the rather lacklustre 5830 to sit in the gap between 5770 and 5850. Looks like they overclock really well, too.

Nvidia back in the game?

Not back in the game quite yet but definately a step in the right direction. And the 5830 was pretty useless even before the GTX460 came out, sat in no mans land with a price tag that was too high

460 IS Nvidia back in the game - the card is a game-changer IMO. It's top shelf performance for a $200 give or take price tag, with superb overclockability that will rival a 5850. Frankly who cares about 470/480 anymore - if they upscaled GF104 they'd have a truly competitive product at every level.

200$ ftw

my new gtx260 is gonna cost 260$
IF I GET IT
il wait and see mah shiny gtx460

ps how the power requirement compared to a 260?

So overclock the 5850 and it rivals the 5870.... You have to compare apples to apples. The GTX460 is good value for money, but will not let you turn everything on at 1920x1080 and maintain smooth fps in several new games. And GF104 cant be upscaled as far as I'm aware, it is after all the downscale of GF100.

Which games are those?

Fps is listed as */*, first one is the 768mb version, second is the 1gb version
Dirt 2 46/53, metro2011 14/17, battlefield bad company 2 32/34. RTS games like Anno 1404 get around 35fps but for a RTS that is playable

Does the 460 support something like Eyefinity?

If not then ATI still has the upper hand.

768? 1 Gig?

my ATI has had double that in GDDR5 2 years ago - nVidia is still behind imo.

The factory overclocked Palit Sonic whatchamacallit edition sits at 800/1000 out of the box, costs $245 at Newegg, and goes head on with a 5850. So yeah apples for apples it's a very very competitive piece. Come on give Nvidia some credit for once here.

Most ATI's still have 1gb ddr5 - it's only non ref high performance pieces that offer 2gb, and often with little gain. 5770 has 128bit bus width - positively archaic. Now let's see what happens when Nvidia upscales GF104 hey.

That is like Apples on growth hormones and steroids vs normal apples!

lol no it's like fantastic price/performance ratio. Look if you want to take objection to the overwhelmingly positive reviews everywhere on the internet you'd better have some solid points. Atm 460 is the undisputed king at the $200 ish price point which is really the sweet spot for most people. Combine that with great overclockability, low temps, quite acceptable power consumption, small size (smaller than 5770) - it's a total win.

lol i'm not arguing the fact that its awesome price performance ratio etc.

Just saying when people compare apples vs apples we talking stock standard.. Factory overclocked is not stock :) that was my point.

:p

I think this is going to be my next goal for upgrade - with a view to SLI'ing them at some time in the future. BTW SLI performance is off the charts. They'll compete with a 5970 in SLI - well a bit behind I think but not a whole lot.

I'm actually contemplating taking back a 5770 I bought and buying one of these! It's still in the box and un-used..
Any one know when these are arriving in SA?

I did give credit to nvidia, I said
GTX460 is good value for money
Its not meant to compete against the 5850. At stock the 460 will get beaten and in terms of value for money I'd say the 5850 edges ahead. OC both cards... Not sure, will need to do some more reading, but I suspect the 460 may take the lead in terms of value for money. SLI/xfire, 460 wins hands down. nvidia has some crazy scaling (up to 99%) with their cards, something that ATI is lacking (90% at the very best).

They are already here, well at least I see the 768MB version is in stock. Don't know how long they will be in stock for though.
