Nvidia GTX 460

Most ATI's still have 1gb ddr5 - it's only non ref high performance pieces that offer 2gb, and often with little gain. 5770 has 128bit bus width - positively archaic. Now let's see what happens when Nvidia upscales GF104 hey.

The GF104 is already upscaled, it is called the GF100. Nvidia fans can only look forward to downscaling ala GF108. I fail to see how a mid range card can generate so much excitement, as it is not even driving down the competitions prices.

It did drive down prices - the over priced 5830 dropped $30. And the GTX460 is amazing value for money, which is what 99% of people are after. So the excitement is justified.

Yeah.. GF104 to GF100 is similar to G80 to G92 transition - smaller, more power efficient, faster architecture overall. The first 8800 cards were massive and hot - then the single pcb 8800's changed everything - that was the architectural basis for their next 4 years' worth of gpu's. Majority of people want ideally to pay around $200 for a card - ATI had a massive underserved gap there in the 5 series, and Nvidia appeared to have just lost the plot completely with Fermi. This is showing that Nvidia still values the gaming segment, that they are still in the game to win - it's going to force ATI to release something more competitive, which is only a good thing for us.

Why do people say things like this when they obviously haven't even bothered to check the facts? GF104 is not just a downscaled GF100. It has increased the number of cuda cores, SFU's and texture units per SM, and introduced superscalar operation (a first in Nvidia GPUs afaik) to balance the load. The result is that it is generally more efficient than its big brother. This is big news on its own, because unlike ATI which just cut down its chip (uh, this one is Cypress right?) for the 5830 and Nvidia did for the GTX 465, this is a fundamental reworking of the architecture. This is pretty much unheard of in a 'waterfall' part.

The fact that it occupies a very attractive price point for its performance is also 'exciting', given Nvidia's price/performance for the last few years. The fact is that only people who are ignorant of the market or ATI fanboys would not be excited to see this card. It is a boost to the industry to have Nvidia competing in mid-range, and should pull down prices in the high-mid range. The fact that Nvidia has the fastest single GPU card (which has a well-known marketing knock-on effect) and probably the best price/performance mid-range card signals (hopefully) a return to a more competitive market, which benefits us.

I agree that the gtx460 is way better than anything Nvidia has produced in the last 2 years, but be realistic and see it for what it is - a below midrange card. Nvidia needs a new architecture (not fermi based) to gain my interest.
Personally I will not even concider bying this as Southern Island is around the corner and will drive down the 5000 series card prices, which will leave this card either at the bottom of the value for money heap or just a card that depreciated quicker than it could be produced.

This will be a very popular card i think, midrange or people gunning SLi, either way another winner for Nvidia. Hopefully Ati can shed some pressure with their upcoming Sourthern and Northern Island Arc's :D

Were do you see it in stock? link please :) as far as i can tell they only gunna be here next week according to prophecy http://www.phforums.co.za/f19/geforce-gtx-460-any-brand-58835/

768mb version:

http://www.prophecy.co.za/inno3d-nvidia-geforce-768mb-gddr5-192bit-pcie-p-72601.html

1GB version:

http://www.prophecy.co.za/n460gtx-cyclone-gtx460-gddr5-256bit-pcie-p-72602.html

What amazes me is the price difference between brands, R600 more for a better fan and a bit more memory (192 bit bus 768 vs 256 bit bus 1GB). Still looks to be an amazing card and will definately get one, but only when Club3D, Force3D, Inno3D etc release their 1GB versions that will most likely be cheaper but work exactly the same as the expensive branded ones :)

Those are the two different versions of the 460. So not just brand pricing. But R600 for 3-5fps extra!! :wtf: thats a rip off!
I thought these things were the $200 mark?
Why they so expensive here? Is prophecy just making quick cash off the hype for these cards? Lets hope the Club3D and Force3D bring the price into a reasonable price range.. R2000
You can get a 5850 for the price they selling these things at..

Ye what a rip!

That's no mid-range bargain card at that price!

The Cyclone will have a price premium placed on it due to the non-reference cooler.

Will be interesting to see what price point the Inno3D 1gig comes in at.

As previously stated, its not just memory thats different between the 768 meg and 1gig versions, the bus is wider (192 bit VS 256 bit) and the 1gig version has 8 more ROPs (32 VS 24).

So true what nakedPeanut says... The 460 only makes sense while its noticeably cheaper then the 5850, if the 1 gig is the same price or more expensive, it no longer makes sense. It would appear that Prophecy ARE taking the piss a little (or their suppliers... Someone somewhere is) as the 1gig RRP is $229 while the 5850 RRP is $299. So the fact that they are that closely priced locally is bullcrap!

No clue what the price is. A friend of a friend works there and he thinks their prices are state secrets or something. He did vaguely say something between R2500 and R3000 for the cheapest one...I'm assuming that's the 768MB.

In terms of performance ATI still takes the cake. If you cant afford it save up longer

In what sense? 460 is faster than 5830; 470 is faster than 5850; 480 is faster than 5870. There is no dual gpu fermi part yet but chances are it'll be faster than 5970 when it arrives.

amazon has it for 200$
i have contacts in uk and usa
hmm maybe buy then ship here
any idea on duty?

Add 20% (iirc), then add shipping. Often comes quite close to the price in rands and then you are sitting without a warranty

I have Rectron's price list infront of me (dated:07/07/10) and no GTX 460 yet...only GTX 465.

I will be picking up 2 x MSI Cyclone 1GB GTX460's in the States, ~$450 for a SLI setup that outperforms a single GTX480 and gets close to a 5970's performance; being cheaper and quieter, no brainer for me.
