Nvidia or ATi

Currently my rig rocks out a 40k score in 3Dmark03 and a 14k score in 3Dmark06. Vantage mark gives me a E29k, P8.5k and H5.9k. All scores in default settings offcourse. Perhaps I should wait a bit more?

Roobir.

I would love to know what resolution you were running and if any AA at all on the 3dMark Vantage. Cause I have similar spec to you but run the GTX280XXX and I dont get close to 29k... more like 12k. But I run at 1080X1920 4XAA.

I ran the default presets, read carefully :P
E = Entry preset (1024x768, low)
P = Performance preset (1280x1024, medium)
H = High preset (1680x1050, high)
Sadly I cant do the Extreme preset, as my rig doesnt support 1920x1080 resolution.

Check out this interesting review. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/build-balanced-platform,2469-8.html

Different CPU's combined with different GPU's. The ATI cards seem to scale way better than the Nvidia cards when using dual core CPU's. For example, even in Crysis which always seemed to perform better with a Nvidia card the HD4890 thumps the GTX285 and the HD4870x2 thumps the GTX295.

So if you've got a dual core CPU (or weak CPU) an ATI card will give you better performance than a Nvidia card.

+1

I just thought EXACTLY that, also get around 12k (70% sure, can't remember), and also at 1920x1080.

Shoo ... feel better now, was wondering if my system sucked!!! Neva bothered with looking at the E / P / H descriptions :o ....

lets do some benchies tonight, i also have a Q6600

Just re-installed my Win7 after I farked it good and solid! Still need to update Graphic drivers etc... then find my 3DMark vantage. But sure lets do it. We sshould make a q6600 thread only!

Aha ... just did the test on E Level = 40788... hmm (CPU=36600, GPU=42406)

MSRP for 5850 has shot up and because of dismal yields from TSMC (not ATI's fault) prices have sky rocketed. 5850 is unlikley to go down in price but up so R4K or around there onece all local stock is gone. ($399 at some places online)
anyway with a P35 board buy a 4890, best bang for buck. Cheapest and fastest for the money as GT20 based cards are hard to come by and as such still cost more than they should.

Radeon HD4890 FTW
(btw transistor count, doesn't mean much if the process has very good yields. right now they are poor so both AMD and NVIDIA suffer, esp ATI since they have an SKU they can't sell)
