Specifically looking for an android based tv box that can actually run as plex media server and be smart enough for a vpn so that I do not have to run yet another pi for routing and filtering purposes. Would the Nvidia Shield TV Pro be enough or should I rather DIY android tv box?

Both the Litbox and MI box can do that and cheaper than Nvidia

The Shield will do it, but it's pricey.
I'm not too worried about the price, from what I see its better than the smartbox which comes with the qled tv (7qfn), otherwise it is a waste to get one.

I'm not too sure if its better specced than what I already have, the samsung's smartbox that comes with tv.

I've seen PMS running on Shield Pro but not on any other Android device. May I ask why you're wanting Android specifically? A mini-PC with linux / windows can do everything you're asking for and will cost you about R2k on Carb.

Well, a part from pms, vpn/routing a normal set with apps would be great (android tv with netflix, and so on). I could diy with a pi/minipc for routing, but I don't think it would be the same "powerhouse" as the shieldpro at 1-2k, or would it?

An i3 with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD, definitely faster than a Shield. This CPU can transcode 3-4 1080p Plex streams easily. On a Shield you're limited to 2 -3 streams. Plex published an interesting article about running PMS on the Shield: https://support.plex.tv/articles/22...n-running-plex-media-server-on-nvidia-shield/

Running PMS on a PC and doing VPN is a breeze to setup and maintain.

EDIT: I've been doing this for years and recently purchased a HP Mini-PC with an i5 CPU for R3k. It runs PMS and can transcode up to 6 1080p streams. Even that's cheaper than a Shield Pro.

Not bad, what about if you want to go 4k?

I'm going to go this route next.
