It doesn't have to install, it runs all on it's own from the device.

VMC is one of the worst bits of software I've come across. And they try to be clever by blocking all other networks apart from Vodacom.

Ditch it.

Some good utilities here.

Why should Vodacom write software to accommodate other vendors? It's like expecting Mercedes to design their car parts to be interoperable with BMW. Besides in most parts of the world that does not even matter because they all network lock their devices (the one thing ICASA has done right).

It does not take that much googling to discover one can replace the network branded dash with a generic on from Huawei that will work with any network, or even better yet use the MDMA tool.

Ok, I'll take the bait.

To put it simply, Vodacom did not make the device, they just branded it. They also put their own software on it, which gets complaints on a regular basis BTW.

If I pay full price for it - a PREMIUM PRICE compared to Europe and other places - I expect it to work fully. It's just a lock by any other name and a workaround for places where locks are disallowed (France/SA/Germany).

It's like BMW putting a sticker on an iPOD and then stopping everyone using it in the MERC. It's really silly and doesn't take account of the way people use the devices. It also reduces it's value by shrinking the market for resale.

It's time they stopped this. I don't know anyone who is impressed by the attitude displayed by Vodafone. In fact it makes people very irritated.

Your typical user is in no position to reflash the device. Many of those who would want to do it may be put off by the loss of warrant and the inherent risk in flashing the ROM.

Besides, if you look carefully at the Vodafone software, you will see that it was designed to work with different APN's and it would have been a very simple process to allow other networks.

I hope I've answered your question fully enough.

As per usual you try and create controversy where there is none.

It would be really nice for you to one day actually post something constructive instead of trolling others' posts trying to find an opportunity to do some VC-bashing. It's pretty weak.

Read up about OEM. It's not really that difficult a concept to get. When you buy a PC does it come pre-loaded with every possible OS?

In any case, I use a number of different of dashboards on my E272 and I've not done anything to the modem. It still contains the VMC-lite software.

I don't seem to have any problems starting whichever dash I want to use.

I was asked by your cohort Morkhans. I've answered him as best I can.

Lest we forget that saying anything you don't like about Vodacom is automatically trolling.

SWALLOW IT.

You miss the point of supportability. While there should be no reason for a non Vodafone SIM to work ith VMC. Vodafone will only test it with their firmware and their SIMs. If you stick a MTN SIM into your Vodafone branded device and insist on using the VMC dash, should MTN be helping you with support when you call? I suspect they will point you at their download page and help you reflash it with their dash.

While we are on flashing: Lets take the E220. It shipped with 2.x. Vodacom released an update to 3.2 for download on their website. I see no difference (technically and level of difficulty) between the dash update from Vodacom and Huawei. Flashing the dash has almost zero risk involved unlike firmware updates. You can even play it safe and use MDMA which requires no flashing at all.

A quick search for "buy now" on ebay.co.uk prices the E220 at anything from 38-70 pounds. Which is about R500-R900. Granted it's less than the second hand market here, but it's not that far off. As a consumer you are welcome to vote with your feed and buy it where you can find it cheapest. No-one is forcing you to buy a Vodafone (or any other provider for that matter) branded modem.

If BMW were selling something that was re-branded then once again they would be responsible for the support of it and thus don't have to offer support for what they deem to be unsupported usage.

You seem to think most people cannot follow a simple point an click procedure. I wonder then how they manage to use their machines at all if you rate their intelligence that low.

No, trolling is when you jump into a thread you did not start, have no real contribution to make but you still post to further your own agenda.

You do it all the time.

Take this thread: A user asks for support on an installation error. You try and turn it into:
And they try to be clever by blocking all other networks apart from Vodacom.

Not only are you completely wrong but it's a pretty feeble and transparent attempt to derail the topic into one of your typical attacks on anything Vodacom.

If Vodacom is so bad and evil, why do you use the network?

Would you call defending the indefensible trolling, because you do it all the time. I elaborated to Morkhans about why I thought the software was bad, but you have contributed nothing worthwhile. How many people have to have the opinion before you agree with them, or are you here to defend your employers. I just wish you would do it in a more civil manner without name-calling and ad hominem attacks. Vodacom/fone isn't perfect (I've never said they were evil - again your little way of adding words not said again aka subterfuge) and I will credit them where it's due.
