My bursary contract states that in instances where an offer of employment has been made I am required to render one year payback service for every year of study for which the bursary was awarded. I have been waiting for 5 months and have received no written communication that the bursar intends to employ me. They have told me on the phone to "sit tight and wait until the end of March" for them to contact me at all - there is no indication that they may even offer employment. How long do I need to wait for an offer of employment before I am no longer obligated to render payback services?

Or is there no period and I will have to pay back the bursary if they do not offer employment?

Typically, if you get a bursary and they decide not to employ you, they will typically scrap that debt. I do think they will have to let you know that they will not employ you though.
If it is not specified in the contract for how long they still have that option it obviously puts you in a difficult position.

The exact same happened to me. They didn't supply me with a job for almost a year, I eventually declared the contract void in September 2019 and took another position. However, we exchanged lawyer letters, then they ignored me for a year and a half, and are now suing me for more than R300k. They're not open to any negotiations regarding loss of income and even miscalculated the amount by R30k.

I've heard a couple of cases like this. Honestly, these guys deserve a class action lawsuit. They're basically luring students eager for a bursary into a terrible loan.
