I'm not sure if this I'd the correct place but I'm desperate for some advice and I don't know where else to get it.

My daughter's teacher has suggested OT to help with handwriting and letter switching(b&ds mostly) I'd just like to chat with anyone who has taken their child for OT and can answer some questions I have. The occupational therapist wants to charge us R150 for every 15 minutes of her time just so we can ask questions...

Try another OT? I don't recall ours charging for the initial consultation.

Hi Shell, which area are you in ? I can put you in contact with someone who is cheaper than that. My son who is 2 now has already been to at OT and it may sound like I'm bragging but his development has been exceptional. He has reached many milestones that older children have not!

No they should not charge per 15 minutes. First assessment should be one smallish fee.

Keep looking - there are many good ones.
And it is definitely worthwhile. Especially for fine motor skills. My son still has terrible hand writing but it helped him in many other ways too.

Don't let one person put you off. And medical aid should pay for the actual consultations.

First assessment is generally the most expensive. if you have gone through a school, it may have been subsidized. Generally involves an hour or two and a full write up post session on whats going on. Each session thereafter generally costs between 400-600... hence the 150 per 15minute cost. However, proper OT's educate parents so you dont need to go back to them, if they dont find, a different one.

Doesn't sound like they're going for an assessment, just an initial consultation.

While it might seem odd....
Try speech therapy.
Decent audiologist will offer this and can be paid by med aid.
Speech therapy can help with many things including comprehension. It has multiple aspects...

At the very least talk to an audiologist to find out about it.

I think in order to initially consult, a therapist would need to do an assessment. Maybe with speech therapy its different and shortcuts could be made. An assessment could highlight other areas and the speech maybe a symptom for example.

Unfortunately we live in a small town with one OT, so we're kind of in a predicament.

Occupational therapy is covered by many medical aids. They should make use of standard codes for pricing.

At least that used to be the case. My mother was an occupational therapist but she retired quite a while back already.

The teacher did mention that you pay the OT cash and you can then claim it back from the medical aid but I have no idea how that works and my husband is so apprehensive about the whole OT thing and the cost involved makes him think it's a money making scheme as the OT works from our kids school.

The OT will supply you with codes for your medical to claim on. OT's can make a big difference, and if you think the issue needs addressing and wont work itself out, then go see the OT.. they can make the world of difference for a child that needs it.

Please look at the asymmetrical tonic neck reflex....the poor handwriting and swopping b&d are possible signs that the ATNR isn’t integrated yet! There are many exercises online to help with integration!
