You do know scuba diving does not entail using a parachute?

If he could have found a way to incorporate it he would have ... Ever so slightly insane, but the discipline and adherence to protocol and rules that he brought to his students made a huge difference. We'd often have one or two "outsiders" on our boat during his trips, and you could clearly see the difference between people he'd trained and people who had perhaps had a less strict instructor. Things like standing on the boat while it's moving, with a weight belt on (no fins, mask or bcd)... kicking the reef... kicking other peoples' regs out by accident. The one guy even had his wetsuit on backwards!

We had an ex Police rescue diver as our instructor. He had no mercy, 2 days in the pool in July. Water was 12 deg. Then Bass lake, where we did 7 open water dives before he certified any of us for a sea dive. It paid off. My wife could never swim under water, he trained her, and she now has 70+ sea dives as my dive buddy.

12 degrees? So lucky That's a warm dive for us

whilst my instructor was never ex-military or anything he was bloody pedantic about protocols and discipline, drives me nuts the way some other divers behave. I think we need to start a SCUBA thread (unless there's one that can be necro'd), we've derailed this one and I'm sure there's lots of stories, tips etc that can be shared

An endless amount. I have just finished reading "Diver Down" for the fifth time. I read it once a year. Brilliant!

Yup.

I'm sure it would have been a much more pleasant experience if it wasn't such a rush job.

I at least wasn't panicked just not comfortable. Poor kid who went with us couldn't even make it in the pool freaked out completely.

Bizarrely enough the guy who couldn't swim had a ball.
