Odd Slow Down when connected via VPN to Work Server

Hi all

Not sure where else to post this so I will put this under Networking as I am sure it is somehow related. We have this odd problem when we connect via VPN to our work server. When connected, all right clicking actions on the users pc slows down - ie right clicking a file on any part of the users machine (desktop, documents, network share drive) etc all slow down substantially. When first connected to the VPN it is fairly snappy and then over the next few mintues slows down to a crawl. I cannot understand why being connected over VPN would cause this and especially why it would cause it to happen on files that are local on the machine.

The work server is running Windows Server 2016 and is fully updated. The users are all on Windows 10 Pro. The firewall is an iShield and this exact same thing happened previously on a TP Link VPN Firewall. So I don't think the VPN itself is the cause but seems to cause it when being connected via VPN. There are no other active things going on besides the antivirus (ESET). Btw I don't think internet speed is an issue. I am on 100mbit fiber at home and work is on 20mbit fiber. No one else is doing anything on the server and the activity is low.

Any suggestions on what to look at?

Thanks

How many people are connected to the VPN? People might be routing all their traffic via the VPN, so that will also drain any bandwidth you have available over you 20 Mb/s fibre connection.

Is the bandwidth reservation configured? QoS?

Hi

Currently I’m the only person on the vpn. No QOS but it’s not a speed issue. Once a copy start it’s quick - it’s only when right clicking any file on my entire computer - whether on network share or not. It starts off fast and progressively slows down. I’ve experienced this now on two completely different firewalls.

Thanks. Yes both are hardware based. The old one was a tplink vpn firewall. The new one is an ishield NG

Could be because Server 2016 enables remote folders (folder sync) by default. Being on your vpn means your pc runs everything as though you’re on lan.

have anything weird on the context menu when you right click?

what if you vpn into the server 2016 machine from the windows pc. client to site instead of site to site. does it do the same.
