Hi guys, I've been hearing my car squeal when I apply the brakes, my mechanic said the brakes are about to give in.

So I went to ford, they gave me a quote of R3427,56, parts and labour, not going that route!
I'm thinking of heading out to Midas or Autozone to get the pads. Could I please get suggestions on a good brand of brake pads? I drive a 1.6 fiesta.

How many km on the car?

Last time i did brakes on my fiesta they were still new on the market no aftermarket pads available, so i bought the pads at ford R890 and had my mechanic change them. That was before i started doing things myself.

I'm getting prices ranging between 450 - 900. I just don't know which one to go with, I want something that won't make noise as I hear some pads are famous for noise and dust.

which brands were they offering, i changed pads at 50k km my driving was a bit um, enthusiastic back then, as mentioned above i got oem pads which i'm still running today, just hit 100k mark the other day still have plenty of pad left.
 
Different brands, ATE, Safeline, some German brand Cretex or something like that, and Ferodo's are the most expensive, but I've heard ferodo's are notorious when it comes to noise and dust.

Depends which ferodos you take they have various models. some are hard some are soft.
 
The thing with brake pads -you get Sintered, organic and combination. Sintered pads are metallic, so they screech more, and last a lot longer, but they also eat your disc more than softer compounds, they do take longer to stop you - less friction, normally a bit more expensive. Organic pads are quiet and stop you faster, but they don't last as long and tend to throw up a lot of brake dust, sometimes cheapest, not always. Combination is balanced across the various pros and cons listed, but tend to be the most expensive.

Both decent brands, never heard of Cretex.
 
Ferodo platinum discs and pads are the way to go. I've used them in all of our companys vehicles as well as my personal garage. Silent, not much dust and they last long.

Just came from this Midas, the correct name is Kratex, fairly surprised with their labelling, it looked premium for the price.

Sales people complained saying they normally get people saying ferodo's are problematic, but I bought a set of ferodo pads, taking a chance if they're not good I'm ditching them.
Mechanic said the discs looked fine, they don't have too much lip to worry about apparently, wish I knew what that is.

I have bought run of the mill Ferodo Premiere and Ferodo Platinum from him in the past.

How long do you maintain company car before being replaced - 3-4 years? Then it is your best option. Just replace pads and don't worry about wearing of the discs.

Most of folks who drive cars longer are more interested in cheap replacement and grinding discs not needed for every two or three brake sets, organic are the best.

The same for most of cheap cars like Ford Fiesta, these cars do not have strong boosters, high friction organic pads are better. Users will experience longer stopping distance when using more expensive metalic pads.

For all performance and luxury cars is in reverse: metalic/platinium pads give longer maintenance period, it matters, cost is not so important. Braking distance is very well controlled by strong boosters and ABS.

For the basic brakes sets (for cheap cars), I always prefered ATE over Ferodo. Ferrodo tend to make more squeezing noises. However had a good experience with Ferrodo Platinium in medium size cars.

As brake pads wear, they somewhat "eat" into the brake disc. Once your mech installs the new pads and they grind then you may need to skim the discs.

I had a combination of Safeline discs and ATE pads on my fiesta st both front and on the rear sometime last year, no noise or dust, I just didn't feel safe with them with my kind of driving :whistle: however I only use ATE pads.

Next time try star brake and clutch in edenvale.

Hmmm okay so I could go back to the shop and get a refund, then take ATE pads?

Just a side note, I love how helpful every one on this forum is. Really appreciate it.
