OFFICIAL 2008/2009 EPL Thread

Can't believe the teams that have survived...But wow, Newcastle have been poor.

Hull, Wigan, Stoke, Sunderland..All pretty poor really.

Real bummer that. Gone are the days when Newcastle would finish 2nd in the league :/

Lets just hope they don't turn into another Leeds story.

Definitely never expected Hull and Stoke to stay up and Newcastle go down

Why the sad face? Perhaps this is the shock Newcastle needs to pull themselves together. Also good to have two minnows stay up for their loyal long suffering fans. Pity Middlesbrough went down though because of their willingness to give English youth a chance in the top flight.

Yeah but look at Leeds. They were one of the best teams in English football a few years back and now they're buriend in the second league. That could very easily happen to Newcastle.

Hull were great for 10 games - after that they were just as bad as Newcastle and Boro.

True about the Boro youth...Maybe the 6+5 rule wouldn't be a bad idea afterall...

Could quite possibly happen. Hence the need to catch a wake up

Yeah but Hull never had the financial muscle that Newcastle and Middlesbrough have.

With Newcastle and Middlesbrough now in first league, won't they lose some big money TV deals that you get from being in the EPL? First league is not nearly as glamorous as the EPL is.

Commentators were saying that teams promoted to EPL could expect an extra 600 million pounds revenue next season!!!

They'll lose tonnes of cash. Still got a large fanatical support base though in Newcastle's case. Problem is getting the wage bill and debts down. They'll lose players on the cheap and will somehow have to replace them with quality players. Mr Ashley is going to have to dig very deep in his own pockets if Newcastle are going to get back up after only one season out IMO.

That has Leeds written all over it. Of course Leeds also had the revenue from the Uefa Champions League but I wouldn't be too hopeful if I was a Newcastle supporter. If they do indeed start losing players, I wouldn't expect to see them back in the EPL anytime soon.

Nah - I'm with Alan on this one. It could possibly be the kick in the arse they need to freshen themselves up. All they need is a manager who isnt afraid of ditching the under-performing "stars" and giving some of the Newcastle youth a big chance. They have had some wonderful players in the past and they could be up after one season much leaner and hungrier than before.

EDIT: Sorry's go out to ratty on this one!

This is Ashley's big moment. He will either not invest heavily in the club in which case Newcastle fans can look forward to years in the wilderness of the lower leagues or he can pump in the cash to stabilize the club financially and on the pitch. If he does the former after what has happened this season he better never set foot in Newcastle ever again.

After what he did with Keegan and Wise who knows what he will do in the end. How on earth he made any money nevermind a billion god only knows.

Birmingham should be able to ride out the season. Burnley have beaten Liverpool and Chelsea in the FA cup before haven't they?
