Cape Town - Just as the dust started to settle on the unsuccessful defence by the Springboks of their Rugby World Cup title, respected sports science guru, Professor Tim Noakes has dropped another bombshell.

In a letter addressed to the Cape Times, Noakes suggested that the result of the World Cup quarter-final between South Africa and Australia was predetermined as a result of what he called 'bent' science.

“When science is manipulated to produce a predetermined outcome, it’s called 'bent' science. Such science is usually directed by large commercial interest. When the outcome of a sporting event is predetermined, we call it ‘match-fixing,’ Noakes wrote in the letter.

“I am not saying that there was match-fixing, I am saying that the IRB must prove there wasn’t,” Noakes added.

Noakes lamented that South Africans have been unjustly robbed of their World Cup crown and based on the evidence of the match, he does not have a doubt that referee, Bryce Lawrence was benefitting from the outcome of the match.

“Referee (Bryce) Lawrence’s selective inability to apply to the illegal actions of one team, the accepted rugby laws in at least three areas of the game can unfortunately be interpreted in only one way - that he was benefitting from it personally by ensuring that the Wallabies would win this ‘bent’ game,” Noakes added.

"I think an injustice has been done and South Africa as a nation deserves the truth."

Noakes went onto say that match fixing should not be ruled out as a possibility in rugby as it is already prevalent in cricket as well as football.

“The tragedy of this travesty is that it has undermined the legitimacy of the 2011 Rugby World Cup and has done severe damage to the credibility of the IRB. But worse, it has also robbed the South African rugby team of their legitimate chance for immortality by winning back-to-back RWC’s.”

Any chance of Wales going all the way?

They have a real chance. They very nearly beat us and we very nearly beat the aussies. Crazier things have happened. They are playing top stuff atm.

Bent science? :wtf: but it makes 100% sense though. And so, can Wales win. In the face of this, my guess is that 'bent science' will probably prevail against them :(

Well if history is anything to go by the ABs have already won it.

No team has ever won the RWC after losing a pool game. The Aussies, Welsh and French have lost pool games.

Yeah would love Wales to win!!!!!!

Sorry dude, Wales ftw, theyve been consistent! They dominated our game without the ref's help. We lost to the aussies with the help of the ref. I say they can beat the Aussies and the All Blacks on a good day. I'm really hoping the home advantage is somehow not a big one, though it's doubtful.

I would also love it if they won BUT I highly doubt it as they last won in 1953.... I just can not see them sticking it to the ABs.

As long as the fscking, cont Aussies do not go any further.

Wales v Australia in the final I think.

Bleh, the New Zealanders are far bigger cheats than the Australians. Don't want McCheat and his cronies to win it.

Are some of you on this board becoming "Cape Crusaders"? ;)

LIMITING THE POWER OF THE WHISTLE

There are no doubt a lot of Australian rugby supporters celebrating our victory over the Springboks yesterday. There are also a number of us that are wondering how on earth we managed to pull it off against a side that dominated possession and territory and lineouts. Now, I don’t want to …take anything away from the Australian victory – our boys did perform superbly but on the day the Springboks were, we have to admit, the better side. The boks, as always were magnanimous in defeat with a somewhat pragmatic approach to the result. I wonder what our boys would have said faced with the same situation of blatant incompetence by Mr Bryce Lawrence. I support Australia and always will but for those of us that believe in fair play this was a hollow victory. This was very much like fighting a worthy opponent with one arm strapped behind his back – it leaves a bad taste. There were rumours about Mr Lawrence’s impartiality before kick-off from a lot of ex pat South Africans now living in Australia but we tend to dismiss these conspiracy theories with a grin. Certainly, Mr Lawrence’s performance on the field did nothing to dispel those theories. His performance was nothing short of abysmal. He did not award the bok try because of a dubious forward pass. I have looked and looked and to me, anyway, it did not look forward. Minutes later when the boks once again breached our defences and were well on the way to scoring another try, he called them back for a forward pass. If the first call was contentious, there certainly was nothing wrong with the second one. Here, I must ask – why not use the “eye in the sky”? An impressive expensive piece of equipment that should be used for such decisions. He failed to penalise Pocock for slowing the ball down. If we had played like that against the All Blacks, they would not have been so quiet about it. – and rightly so. In the dying minutes of the game he was in full view of at least 2 high tackles by our boys that went unpunished. Any of these transgressions, if properly acted on, would have surely given the game to the Boks with their advantage over territory. To rub salt in the South African wounds, he awarded a high tackle to the Wallabies for a chest high tackle. We won, but did we really? Our sport has always been regarded as a “hooligans game played by gentlemen” – If we do not want rugby union to degenerate into a farce that soccer can become we need to make sure that our refs are of suitable calibre. They need to be trustworthy gentlemen. Mr Lawrence, I would advise against any planned holidays to South Africa for a couple of years.

I got this by email as well and think its fake, I cant get the link to the original.

Warburton red carded for a tip/spear tackle.... Wales are going to suffer badly from this.

TBH why the harsh sanction after everything that has happened already in earlier games?

I'm not saying it should not be punished. But where's the consistency? In pool games there were plenty of incidents that were not cited or even penalised.

It seems that someone in the background is orchestrating the outcome of the games. So behind it & who's doing the paying.

No place for the sin bin in rugby!!! It's a load of crap!!! And the argument for binning a player is partly to make the sport safer by ruling harshly against dangerous play. How safe is a 7 vs 8 man scrum I ask you??!!!! It's a load of s hit!!!! I am so f ucking pissed off right now!!!!!

Considering the player and the occasion a yellow would have been sufficient but once again we have a ref who's incapable of using discretion or better judgement or a tempered hand and just like that what was turning out to be a great advertisement and spectacle is reduced to a farce...

I cannot begin to tell you how f ucking pissed off I am right now!!!!

What a disappointment!!!!??

And to compound matters Hook is kicking like he did against SA IE poorly!!!! Kicks win matches ffs!!!!

The RWC has lost it's glory for me.
Bigtime!!! Until the IRB addresses the rules and how refs interpret them, we will forever have matches decided by the man in the middle rather than the players themselves...

Just reading some text commentary...

The WC is becoming a farce. The IRB reminds me of the BCCI and the ICC... Spineless entities.

Huge conspiracy theories afloat with poor and pathetic refereeing decisions.
