OFFICIAL Android thread

I got a HTC Dream a few weeks ago. It is a really awesome phone and the market application is pretty cool. I haven't rooted it yet, dunno if it is neccessary.

so this weekend im gonna learn this rooting and romming thing :)

i have a hero that im going to leave standard (its awesome as it is)
and then i have a magic that i want to load android 2 with sense onto it.

there seem so many options now on xda i just HAVE to give it a go.

only prob is i come from a background of flashing windows mobile, and that was pretty easy. this seems a lot more tricky. does anyone have a real good tutorial they followed? other than whats on xda?

What roms do you guys use on your Hero's? Anything that I should know to make the phone even more awesome? I'm currently reading about rooting...

my two cents, the hero does not need a custom rom, its just THAT good. if you had a magic or dream i would say rom it, but seriously what is a custom rom going to give you?

yeah you can get the android 2.0 rom BUT it is not perfect, has bugs, whereas current hero with sense is WIN

i can recommend a couple must have apps

Too late:D I already have the MoDaCo 3.0 Rom on my Hero.. Boy I love to fiddle with things. Lol! Anyway the Radio upgrade I did is awesome I have way better signal now.. Almost the entire time connected to 3G/HSPA previously I was lucky to get 3G. Need to sync my phone now first and install my old Apps etc.
 
Hi Guys

I just spoke to the guys at Lab88 (Cedar Square) who say that Android 2.0 willnot be avialable for HTC sets as the HTC 1.5 is already at version 2.0 levels compared to other handsets. ?

Anyone heard anything different
 
Got a Dream for the GF on the MTN deal. Good deal, but assumed the phone would be able to use fring or something (anythin!) to make Skype/Gtalk calls. I can use fring with no hassles on my 5800- the frikken Dream cannot even be used as a 3G modem for Skype calls from a laptop.

Now a bit stuck, as that was half the point of getting a 'smater' phone- 3G, chatting and VOIP. Anyone got some info on how to use VOIP on Android? What about tethering??

Really hoping I'm not SOL :o

hey... wow. how is it? whats the advantage other than the radio? which wiki or directions did you follow? please send me links, im so tempted
 
So you guys are all getting the expensive Hero's, Dreams and Magics. What's wrong with a HTC Tattoo for R120 a month?? Everybody can have one.

Surely you should be modding that thing "stukend" just for fun.

@Budza The difficult VOIP on Android is real bummer news. I can't believe that should be a problem. I was hoping to use it on my new Tattoo.

Has anyone worked the data cost per minute for a VOIP call? As opposed to R2.30 per min MTN Anytime for example. What's the quality like?

yeah just got my lady the tattoo, its pretty darn cool, and has interchangable art covers. she loves it. put it up against the hero you can see the screen is not as hi res tho, but doesnt worry her.

ps isnt voip still illegal in SA?
 
It's very good!! I think the scrolling is faster in all the applications for instance. I will be able to install all my Applications on the SD card which will free the ROM memory which is rather low with standard ROM. I will also be able to install the market enabler to get the full market(not just the free stuff). I've got wifi thethering, voice search on almost everything. WaveSecure on Rom not Core. There's a couple of other applications there that wasn't preinstalled on the stock rom. Like Java, Notes, Spareparts and superuser permissions obviously.

Let me just get all my links/info in one "basket"then I'll post it for you kvi.

PS. This is my first smartphone so it's not very difficult.
BUT please do a Nandroid backup of our ROM because I never did and MoCaDo don't have our ROM yet. So we can upload it for him. PLZZZZ
 
is it still android 1.5? or a mix of 1.5 and 1.6?
