This will definately have a affect on Virgin Mobile as well.

e-mail from Virgin Mobile:

Hi Guys

Below is the official response from Cell C, I would suggest if we get any questions relating to this we inform our clients duly. Secondly maybe we should use Piesang to post a note on Techie website.

The “official” answer is that Cell C will not be investing in 3G technology in the next year. There is a possibility that they will look at it in 2008.

Regards

Craig

dont blame them, not to many people have it, and even less use it for anything worth mentioning at the moment anyway.

when i run low on a-time i limit my connection to 1KBs which is so slow i give up. i never use 3g anyway

...but virgin is also using vodacom in some form or another..... aren't they?....

It would be great if Virgin could negotiate a deal with either Vodacom or MTN (or both!) to provide 3G

Wouldn't that depend on how much revenue this would generate for VC and MTN via wholesale data prices to Virgin?

I dont think that CellC have much capital to upgrade their EDGE service, thats why I was hoping for an alternative.

I'd be interested to know what kind of arrangement VM has with Cell-C. The way it looks they are getting shafted when it comes to their data service. This on/off, working/not working deal must have been very cheap. LOL

Is Cell C's GPRS always down when Virgin's is too? Never used Cell C itself for GPRS.

I don't know about Cell-C but what I can tell you out of my experience is that when Virgin Mobile is so slow then I try roaming on Vodacom. And believe me, if it wasn't for the disconnects Virgin Mobile have all the time they would've been much better than Vodacom what GPRS/EDGE is concerned.

Vodacom 3G/HSDPA is still the best when it comes to speed and reliability but it's way too expensive.

Unfortunately, MTN has the best reception in my area, the rest are terrible.
