Chelsea appoint Villas-Boas

Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas on a three-year deal.

The Blues have been locked in talks with Villas-Boas after his £13.3million release clause from Porto was activated on Monday.

Now Chelsea have wasted little time in securing the deal and they were delighted to confirm his appointment in a statement released on the club's official website.

They said: "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce that Andre Villas-Boas will be the club's new manager.

"He has signed a three-year contract and will start work immediately.

"Andre was the outstanding candidate for the job. He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time.

"His ambition, drive and determination matches that of Chelsea and we are confident Andre's leadership of the team will result in greater successes in major domestic and European competitions.

"Andre will bring his coaching experience back to a club he is already very familiar with, having previously worked here for three years.

"He has always been highly regarded at Chelsea and everyone here looks forward to welcoming him back and working with him."

Eish. Essien out for prolly six months...

Following injury to his right knee in training last week Michael Essien had surgery today to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.
The surgery was successful and Michael's full recovery could take up to six months.
Andre Villas-Boas said: 'Everyone at Chelsea wishes Michael well for his recovery. His team-mates and all the staff and I look forward to helping him return to playing as soon as possible.'
 
Sad for Essien, he was one of the only Chelsea players I liked.
 
Not really sad for him to be brutally honest. He's getting the best treatment money can buy, he's still receiving his salary and will get the benefit of the doubt when he comes back from injury though I personally think he's not half the player he was. He'll still be able to do a lot of good in Ghana despite his injury. However, this will allow us to give other... younger... midfielders a chance to shine. Josh, take your chance!
 
This is the 2nd season that he is mostly going to be absent from, very sad.

He has not been the same since his last injury.
 
The question I think we need to ask ourselves is whether we should be replacing Mikel, and I personally think we should stick with him. In the right team setup, he would do wonders.

EDIT: Just saw an article that AVB might use Luiz as a holding midfielder to help the lad improve his tackle timing and adapt to the defensive part of his game while utilizing his prodigious talent on the ball in a more offensive role that still requires defensive play.
