I don't think there's an ICS ROM for the HTC Desire with Sense.
You will have to go stock ICS its faster and smoother anyway. I use Sandvold http://www.sandvold.as/download.htm its fast and I use it as my daily rom everything works video recording is a bit choppy sometimes but other than that its fine.
It has 2 installation options normal and custom if you select custom you can select different A2SD's and kernels, nice

already have rooted my device and am currently running insertcoin android 2.3, how do i load a different rom?

Drop the zip onto the root. Reboot into recovery. Backup current rom. Wipe Cache, Data, Ext, Factory Reset. Install zip from sd card. Reboot. (First boot can take a few minutes).

You will lose all your apps and settings. Depending on the rom, some settings like wifi passwords may be synced with your google account. Your app installations are synced with Google Play and should reinstall - however I suggest you make a backup using titanium - note when moving to different roms a restore of a titanium backup can give you problems. So a reinstall via Play might be better albeit a lot more time consuming.

is it worthwhile backing up the current rom?
 
If something goes wrong with your phone (boot loop, unsuccessful flash) you'll basically have a non-functioning phone. The backup is a very easy way to get your phone back to pre-flash state. It will restore everything including apps, settings, messages i.e. its a 1:1 image of your phone.

If you don't have a backup image, you can still get a working phone back as Elimentals said.

Erm Snr sys admin for a ISP. Trust me I know what a back-up is.

When it comes to flashing RUU is way better than a manual back-up as it fixes the boot as well as the ROM, as it returns the phone to full stock status.

Restoring aps is a crap idea, as it stuffs up the future updates from Google Play so I'll only back-up call logs and messages if you want to keep that data.

If you want ICS with sense,you'll need more internal memory or maybe a waterred down version of sense. It looks like HTC didn't planned ahead when designing the Desire.

Currently I don't think anything comes close to Sandvold's rom, although it is still very very buggy (Kernal issues). They basically pushing out nightly's every third day. Apparently Shaky is making a lot of "progress" kernal wise. I wonder if it will make any difference once the Desire S get its ICS port.

For me, still on Oxygen 2.3.2. by AdamG

Just started using it, so far much faster then BCM only thing it's missing is that the widget with wifi etc when you pull down the notification.

Edit:
Seems i don't have enough space for apps. How is this possible because when i was running insertcoin i had even more apps and never had this problem. Guessing its something to do with the new rom.

Suggestions?

Depends on what the rom is doing with the apps. The desire's internal memory is very very small. Insertion creates a partition on the sd card that acts like internal memory. Most desire specific roms will do something similar.

I shrunk the system size allocated for the rom, so more internal for apps. But again depends on the rom.

Running cm7.2.

I'd also like to retire my desire gracefully with ics. :)

seems just followed these steps and it seems sorted, tho phone was a bit slow so going to restart

If my phone is dropping connection quite a bit is that because of the radio (It's happened with 2 different roms) ?
Have used vodacom and cell-c
