OFFICIAL HTC Desire Thread

Not sure if this has been mentioned before: If anyone is having problems with the small internal memory on the Desire, try out an app called Data2SD. You can set X amount of space on your SD card which you can use for application data. After continuously getting the 'low memory' warning, I got sick of deleting data for my apps to free up space. So far with Data2SD installed I have not received that warning, and I've set 100mb as my 'data drive'. It's working well so far with FB, Browser, Whatsapp, GMail, Maps, StumbleUpon.

The app requires root access.

Thanks man, it's something thats stopping me from using my phone to its full potential! Always having to remove apps etc.

Yeah that's the one downfall with the Desire! Once you've set the desired amount of space, you have to manually select which applications & its data you want moved across. You do this from within the App :)

Or... just create a 1gig EXT4 partition on your SD card, load a custom ROM with integrated Apps/Dats2SD function, and never worry about it again.

I've done that before, but it didn't work so well for me because for some reason I couldn't mount the SD card through USB in windows to copy files over.

Never had an issue personally... It's probably been refined a fair bit from the first attempts; used my phone with that arrangement for about the last year until I bought the Sensation last month...

Anyhat, whatever works for you!

Also an option is a reduced system partition. So that you can use more of the internal memory since sd cards have more r/wr performance issues.

Finally got myself a Droid, HTC Desire (Thanks Haptic).

It has Runnymede v5 installed and I want to put this on instead http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961

Could someone guide me through the whole process? How do I perform a full wipe of the device and I also want to use an 8GB Class4 microSD instead of the 4GB Class2 supplied?

I take it the phone made it there in one piece, then? :)

The phone's already S-OFF, with the stock HBOOT configuration.

Easy as pie to get the new one on:
  1. Download the Runnymede .zip from XDA
  2. Switch off the phone
  3. Stick your 8GB MicroSD in the phone, along with your SIM, and stick it all back together
  4. Switch back on while holding the volume-down button, which will get you to the hboot menu
  5. Use vol-down to select 'Recovery'
  6. Push power button quickly
  7. Once in Recovery (4EXT on the background) tap on wipe | format
  8. Tap on 'format all partitions (except sdcard)'
  9. Tap back arrow
  10. Tap 'Tools'
  11. Tap "partition sd card"
  12. Remove all partitions and start from scratch
  13. Select the size you want for your Data2SD partition - 1 gig will be quite fine
  14. Skip the other 2 options it gives you for partition size
  15. Push back button until you're back at the main EXT4 menu
  16. Tap "toggle usb storage"
  17. Connect phone to PC with USB cable; it'll be picked up as an external drive
  18. Copy the .zip from XDA onto the SD card
  19. Tap to disconnect mass storage
  20. Tap "install .zip from sd card"
  21. Tap "choose zip"
  22. Tap the file you downloaded
  23. Run through the motions, aaaaannd...
  24. DONE!

Should just about cover it... ;)

Thanks! Did what you said, rebooted and it's stuck at the S-Off screen (about 5 minutes now), any idea what's wrong? :)

Edit
Installing again, it says I'm using stock HBOOT

Ah, balls. Check post #4 on xda - I see there's a link to an installation guide. Maybe I missed something stupid. But the first boot can take a loooooooong time... I'd get worried after 20 minutes, not 5. ;)

Can someone help me with getting S-OFF working? I'm trying to install Aurora and I think it needs S-OFF, it just sits on the HTC bootscreen.

Righty, I got S-OFF on my device using AlphaRev. MIUI & CYANOGEN flash perfectly, however I'm having problems trying to get Aurora (Sense 3) working. Has anyone here successfully flashed a ROM that requires an EXT4 partition?

If I create the EXT4 partition on the SD card and flash Aurora, the phone hangs at the boot screen. If I remove the EXT4 partition and reflash, I get past the boot screen and into the ROM boot screen, then the phone just restarts and the same thing happens. I've had to restore backups for MIUI so that I can use my phone again :o I've a feeling my EXT4 partition is the problem.

I'm really keen to try a Sense ROM, any recommendations? Think I'm gonna try RunnyMede tonight, perhaps InsertCoin too.

running insert coin. Think one of the older versions, like v50 nightly.

Is InsertCoin a Sense rom?

Man I just don't know whats up. Google is no help, XDA forums are no help (waiting on a reply..). If I flash a Sense rom (Aurora or Runnymede) I get these "the process com.android.phone" errors, like a lot of them. I can't even use the phone. I have to restore a MIUI backup in order to get my phone back to working order. I can flash MIUI and Cyanogen with no problems. I've been trying this whole week to get a new rom on :(

Thanks. I followed this guide when I wanted to S-OFF.

My problem seems to be with an application that I installed which moved apps & processes to the SD card. Now that these new roms want to use these apps & processes they cannot find them.. so now I have to move them back to the internal storage which is proving very difficult.

I've edited my post where I suggest this app and added my issue as a warning. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...esire-Thread?p=7682391&viewfull=1#post7682391

I managed to get the ROM working! Recovery>Wipe Data, then flashing the ROM worked. Coulda sworn I'd done that :o Running Aurora and its great!
