Official ICC 2015 CWC thread

I just don't hope the selectors mess-up. Eden Park is a much different wicket than what we played on as bowlers dominate and swing bowlers at that. If they select Morkel with his bouncers afterwards everyone will feel we were short of a swing bowler. Lessons have to be learnt by the selectors that you have to choose the bowlers to suit the wicket. If they don't select Philander and Morkel is ineffective, and we lost, the selectors will be off the hook as the public will just blame the players for choking,
But Philander is not just a swing bowler. Along with Jimmy Anderson, arguably they are by far the two best over the last 5 years.

Sure the likes of Starc&Boult can do it, but 50% of the time they are swing bowlers. Some like Steyn rely on swing through the air, not both through the air and off the seam.

Philander is adept at both, and a swing bowler 100% of the time - convetntional or reverse. That's why he was our best bowler in our tours to NZ&AUS.

Leaving him out would be rather foolish in my opinion ... not that it counts for much here.

Would be very funny to see both Southee&Boult get fifers, while Steyn, Morkel&Abbott combined can't even get more than 3 wickets (one each), and we have to rely on Tahir&Duminy again, on a pitch that does not resemble the SCG in any way. Truth be told, the only bowler we have who can do as much damage to NZ as those two can to the Proteas, is Philander. Period!

Wonder if it would have been the same weed Marlon was smoking before the game? Can't help but wonder how this match would have turned out if he had held onto that catch?

Very few teams can survive early wickets. NZ for me is one of them, SA another! We know the Aussies have the depth to survive 3 or 4 early wickets and I thought Zimbabwe was another team who showed far more ability, the further down the batting order you went.

If you get McCullum, Guptill and Kane relatively early, it's tickets and Guptill's average against SA is a paltry 11.5 so his early wicket is a given!! In 10 knocks he's scored 115 runs against SA with a high score of 58!!

Good point. Lets just be positive and hope we pull through to final.

"It was a joy to watch him bowl today, his stats will never reveal how great of a spell that was" - Brian Lara
"This is one of the great spells in the 2015 World Cup" - Tom moody
"That's as good as Ive face in ODI cricket for a long time" - Michael clarke
"I had a lot of luck to get through wahab's spell" - Shane Watson
"Best spell of fast bowling Ive seen in a long time" - Shane Warne
"Ive never seen a bowler bowl like him today" - Misbah
"Best spell of bowling by a foreigner on aussie soil for years" - Kevin Pieterson
“I don’t know what the ICC is thinking. It’s just uncalled for. We need this in a sport that people are running away from, especially 50-over cricket. I loved the exchange. It’s ridiculous what the end result is. We are all entertainers. That to me was one of the highlights of the World Cup. A guy running in bowling at 150km/h plus and Watson looked like he was at school. I want to meet with [this] Riaz guy. I’ll pay the fine.” - Brian Lara

Will the world remember that Morne Morkel & Dale Steyn were even part of the CWC?

The list of the great fas bowlers of this CWC, and performances to remember reads like this so far:
1 - Tim Southee (7/33 vs England - my favourite one of them all);
2 - Mitchell Starc (Every match of his, but 6/28 vs NZ takes the cake);
3 - Trent Boult (5/27 vs AUS, 4/44 vs WI plus 5/51 vs SA in warm-up);
4 - Mohammed Irfan (4/30 vs ZIM & 3/52 vs SA);
5 - Wahab Riaz (4/45 vs ZIM, 3/45 vs SA, SA plus Most Memorable Spell of the CWC vs Shane Watson);
6 - Sohail Khan (5-55 vs IND. If Wahab&Irfan had turned up too, IND would've been thumped heavily.)
7 - Tendai Chatara (3/35 vs PAK, plus maiden over vs Shikar Dhawan :D . Few consistently bowled world class opening spells as good as his.)
8 - Mitchell Johnson (4/22 vs poor AFG to deliver biggest ever win in a CWC, after AUS had posted highest ever total in a CWC. Not very deserving but unmistakably brutal at most times.)

NB: Special mention to Mohammed Shami. India owe their remarkable success to him. He's been unbelievably consistent. Taking wickets regularly and bowling superbly, should really be on the list, but sadly nothing great about him stood out. Just one wicket for Abbott against SL, very much the slowest of these ten names, but he did have a good opening spell. Combine that with his decent bowling against Ireland and he does deserve a mention.

Good for them. A good spell or two big whoop. We still have Steyn at an ave of 25 and strike rate of 31. Southee is at 30 and 34. We have to back ourselves. On paper we are by far the best. Performance wise in this world cup actually too. We just have to believe it. I mean our top batsmen average above 50 this WC and two of our bowlers are among the leading wicket takers.

Respectfully, kind sir, please don't feed the Troll :o

Rather place him on your ignore list as many others have done.

I know, I know. Instead of putting on ignore, I choose the posts I want to reply to. I see him as an opportunity to let out some steam. Every thread needs an antagonist even though he takes it to a different level.

This match is going to be epic. My boss already openened the boardroom big screen for a 3am start on Tuesday morning. We are going to pull this one through. We have to and we will! I am hoping for a SA vs AUS final. Nothing better than beating those pricks in a final.

I wish I had your boss. I am talking to mine tomorrow about a day's leave. There are TV's in the building, but they're always switched off :rolleyes: I am going to be unproductive, so I may as well be unproductive from 3am at home. I don't want to miss this clash and end up reading it on CricInfo or the like (servers all block streaming).

Take a day sick leave. I feel you. Already some of the games waking up at XYZ score after 30 overs feels like you dropped the guys. I am amped at watching at work but on the other hand watching on the couch also looks good. Got a working wife and logistics with the toddler is a bit of a mission early morning. If it was a midweek final I would def be there. We dont get the rest of the day off so we better win!

NZ batting is really not that good. Also I feel NZ, besides the Aus game, have not seriously been tested - and they nearly blew that game!

We've had a much harder road to the SF, which will serve us well!

PROTEA FIRE

6-2 South Africa's head-to-head advantage over New Zealand since the 2011 World Cup, when they lost to them by 49 runs in Mirpur. Since then, New Zealand won a three-match series 2-1 in South Africa in 2013, but South Africa won two series in New Zealand - 3-0 in 2012, and 2-0 in 2014. South Africa have a 9-9 win-loss record against New Zealand in New Zealand, but have won each of their last five ODIs there.

4-2 New Zealand's head-to-head advantage in six World Cup games between the two teams - they've won each of the last three, in Mirpur in 2011, St George's, Granada in 2007, and Johannesburg in 2003. They also played at Eden Park, Auckland, in the 1992 World Cup, a match which New Zealand won by seven wickets.

0 The number of wins for both teams in nine World Cup semi-finals. New Zealand have lost each of the six World Cup semi-finals they have played - in 1975, 1979, 1992, 1999, 2007 and 2011 - while South Africa lost in 1992 and 2007, and tied against Australia in 1999, which led to their elimination as Australia finished higher than them in the Super Six table.

7.54 New Zealand's run rate in the mandatory Powerplay overs, easily the best among all teams in this tournament. Australia are next with a rate of 6.16. South Africa are fifth with a run rate of 4.95.

16 Wickets for New Zealand in the mandatory Powerplays, the joint-highest in the tournament along with West Indies. New Zealand's 16 wickets have cost 20.06 each, while they've conceded 4.58 runs per over in the mandatory Powerplays. South Africa have taken 12 wickets during this period, at an average of 24.83 and an economy rate of 4.25. Trent Boult leads the way with ten wickets during this period - the most by any bowler - while South Africa's best is Kyle Abbott with six. Dale Steyn has only three wickets during the mandatory Powerplays.

11.84 South Africa's run rate in the last 15 overs, the best among all teams during this period; they also average 70.36 in the last 15, which is the highest among all teams. Their run rate in the batting Powerplays is 9.43; the next best is Australia at 7.85. New Zealand have a run rate of 9.95 in the last 15, and 7.05 in the batting Powerplays.

5.78 South Africa's economy rate in the last 15, again the best among all teams. They have taken 26 wickets during this period, second only to India's 27. New Zealand's economy rate of 6.27 during this period is third among all teams in this World Cup.

15 Wickets taken by the leading spinner for each team. Daniel Vettori has averaged 15.73 at an economy rate of 3.81, while Imran Tahir has an average of 18.86 and an economy rate of 4.20.

38 Wickets that New Zealand have taken in the middle overs (between 11th and 35th), easily the highest by any team. India are next with 31, followed by Australia (29) and South Africa (28).

5 Number of batsmen who've scored hundreds for South Africa - AB de Villiers, David Miller, Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy and Hashim Amla. No other team have five different centurions in this World Cup. For New Zealand, Martin Guptill is the only batsman who has scored a hundred.

5-1 The win-loss record for teams batting first in the last seven ODIs in Auckland - one game was tied. All of these were day-night games. In these seven games, the average 50-over score for the team batting first has been 245, with only two scores in excess of 250. In this World Cup, Australia have scored 151 (lost to New Zealand), Pakistan 222 (beat South Africa) and Zimbabwe 287 (lost to India) when batting first here.

62 The combined strike rate for Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson against Steyn in ODIs. McCullum has scored 39 from 62 balls, and Williamson 27 from 44. However, Steyn hasn't dismissed them often: McCullum has got out once, and Williamson never to Steyn in ODIs. Against Morne Morkel, these two batsmen have collectively scored 93 from 92 balls (strike rate 101) and got out twice.

105 Amla's strike rate against Boult in ODIs - he has scored 41 from 39 balls without being dismissed.

96 The combined strike rate for de Villiers and Amla against Tim Southee. De Villiers has scored 52 off 46 balls (dismissed once), and Amla has 66 from 77 balls (dismissed twice).

We've got this one. Batting first or second, a good start (70 odd for the loss of 1 or 2 or better) is the key. We have already proved to ourselves what we can do in the last 15 with wickets in hand.

What impressed me with the SL game is how we targeted their key batsmen when bowling, much better batting than NZ. Steyn and the boys have a plan against McCullum and Williamson.

And we get a lot of flak for AB being a one man wonder... truth is anyone of those guys could step up on the day.
Its sad when non of them do but a LOT has to go wrong for all of them to fail.

excluding, AB, McCullum, Kohli and Warner - which batsman do you think will fire in the semi finals ( excluding all rounders)...

choosing my fantasy team and I'm 300 points behind the leader so a good call here could well get me back in the lead...
