Cotter said the changes were made "in light of the amount of work we had to go through last week. That was one of the most physical and fastest games we've had all year."

Huh? Yeah the Japanese played well, even though undisciplined against an #16 Scottish player with a whistle. Not to mention that Scotland only managed to score their margin victory when Japan was down to 13 men. However, the above is PR talk...

"It will be a fast and hot game and will be tiring," said Cotter. "The bench will have a big role to play in the last 20 minutes."

To take note, the 2019 RWC will be a bastard, the climate.

Japan is yet to announce their team, with now 11 1st choice players being unavailable, also losing Matsushima last week with Horie still in question... they are likely to call up a university rugby player, Rikiya Matsuda, at the back and they do have Male Sa'u back in the squad. Their quality will be more or less the same than last week.

Maybe this special attendance will give them the little push to win Scotland,

Japan name their team later Thursday for Saturday's test, which will be played at Ajinomoto Stadium in front of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

Last weekend's game in Toyota had the largest international rugby attendance to date in Japan.

*** THE SPRINGBOK TEAM IS AS FOLLOWS ***

15 Willie le Roux, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 JP Pietersen, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Siya Kolisi, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1 Tendai Mtawarira

Substitutes: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Steven Kitshoff, 18 Julian Redelinghuys, 19 Franco Mostert, 20 Jaco Kriel, 21 Rudy Paige, 22 Morne Steyn, 23 Lwazi Mvovo

Yay Jaco Kriel is on the bench at last! And I'm so happy that Combrinck and Whiteley are both starting.

I think Jesse Kriel should have been on the bench instead of Mvovo.

Any other players in the squad that didn't get a chance?

Scarra, Groom, April and Notshe are the only ones out of the original squad that haven't been picked for a match day 23 as far as I can see.

They were called to the A team squad. Groom got called back to the Springbok squad, but did not get a chance in the match day 23.

Riyika Matsuda, one of those sin-binned, will start at fullback for his third cap, while veteran Male Sa'u was back on the right wing. Another Rugby World Cup player, No. 8 Ryu Koliniasi Holani, was summoned to the reserves.

Meanwhile, Japan changed only two - both outside backs - for the second test on Saturday in Tokyo, after losing the first 26-13.

Japan: Riyika Matsuda, Male Sau, Tim Bennetts, Harumichi Tatekawa, Yasutaka Sasakura, Yu Tamura, Kaito Shigeno; Amanaki Mafi, Shokei Kin, Hendrik Tui, Naohiro Kotaki, Hitoshi Ono, Kensuke Hatakeyama, Shota Horie (captain), Keita Inagaki.

Reserves: Takeshi Kizu, Masataka Mikami, Shinnosuke Kakinaga, Kotaro Yatabe, Ryu Koliniasi Holani, Keisuke Uchida, Kosei Ono, Mifiposeti Paea.

I can only hope that Male Sa'u will improve the backline... I must say though, Shokei Kin is doing extremely well in Leitch's boots, he is not even big and did not give two schits about Richie Gray and Jonny Gray, to quote this tweet,

Scotland players caught mouthing 'aim for no.7 (Shokei Kin)'.

Good to see Horie being available, Amanaki as always an champ.

What is important is this,

Japan vs Scotland
@ Ajinomoto Stadium, Tokyo
Referee: Marius Mitrea (Italy)
Assistant Referees: Ben O'Keeffe (New Zealand), Brendan Pickerill (New Zealand)
TMO: Ian Smith (Australia)

Ben screwed the Japanese, hoping to see the Italian promote good rugby.

If we can only get Louw fired then we would have a team that could win a WC.

In other news the New Zealand schools team is set to take to the pitch this Saturday against the Welsh. Bookies give the NZ school team 4:1 odds against the Welsh.

That guy next to Faf looks like Asher from Spartacus

Julian Redelinghuys. Riding the bench 'cos, contrary to every expert ever, as well as, I'd assume, his own eyes, AC thinks Frans Malherbe can actually scrum and play the game of Rugby.

EDIT: Keep an eye out on those faces chaps. The Lions supporters here will tell you they are actually superstars you just haven't met yet.
