Who was the number 7 before Cantona? I think Denis Law also played at number 7...

I might be wrong, but that was George Best, not Law.

Also, for before Cantona, there was no set squad number for shirts, iirc.

Never officially. He was given the #12 when squad numbers were introduced. But yeah, before Cantona he wore the #7 most games.
Correct

Here is a list of our top ten players who have worn the number seven jersey. Please note that some players also wore other numbers during their career so this is JUST GAMES WEARING NUMBER 7 and only in full league games.

You could wear any number up until 1993/94 when squad numbers were introduced. Robson, Spence, Coppell, Morgan, Beckham, and Bryant all wore other numbers......so only Berry, Ronaldo, Cantona and Delaney wore solely the number seven shirt.

Here is the list:

1. Bryan Robson (1981-1994) - 316 apps
2. Billy Meredith (1907 - 1921) - 302 apps
3. Joe Spence (1919 - 1933) - 292 apps
4. Johnny Berry (1951 - 1958) - 247 apps
5. Steve Coppell (1975 - 1984) - 236 apps
6. Willie Morgan (1968 - 1975) - 221 apps
7. David Beckham (1993 - 2003) - 191 apps
8. John Schofield (1900 - 1907) - 156 apps
9. Cristiano Ronaldo (2003 - ) - 148 apps
10. William Bryant (1934 - 1939) - 148 apps

other notable names...

11. Eric Cantona (1993 - 1997) - 143 apps
12. Jimmy Delaney (1946 - 1951) - 128 apps
13. George Best (1963 - 1974) - 114 apps

Interestingly, the number seven jersey has changed ownership very little in the last 100 years. Schofield directly to Meredith who then relinquished to Joe Spence and then Bill Bryant. After the war Delaney held it until Berry took over, so for over ten years only two players had ownership. After Munich players like Morgans, Bradley, Giles, Moir and Connelly had it for short periods before Best took over in the mid 1960's and then handed it over to Morgan in 1968/69. Then Coppell took it over in 1974/75 and passed it on to Robson who wore it from 1981/82 until 1992/93 when Cantona took it over. Obviously Beckham and Ronaldo have held the mantle since then. People like Andrei Kanchelskis only wore the seven jersey in 25 games....in the early 1990's when Robson was injured.

Does anybody know when this whole number 7 and 9 and maybe even number 10 started. That usually the best midfielders or strikers get this number

Maradonna was a number ten right? Maybe other's wanted the number because he had it? Pele was what? 9?

Fsk you Owen Hargraeves... hope you ruin your career @ Man City with your latest statements... United does not pay 17 million for a midfielder to get prodded and probed for 3 years...

Goodness I hate Robson. I dunno why, the sight of him just irritates.

Robson is the man. End of.

To be honest, don't give a ****, but I heard something quite funny on twitter yesterday:
I walked into a dentist for a filling, they punched all my teeth out and the I offered to work for them for free.

:D

With Woodgate escaping a red card, that makes four times already this season that a United opponent has not been sent off when clearly should have gone, Arshavin, Davies, and Cole being the others
