What about a diamond formation in midfield? RvP and Rooney up front, Mata directly behind them, Januzaj and Valencia on the wings and Fellaini just in front of the defense.

That will leave us even more exposed in midfield though :/

We tried the diamond last season, it wasnt very successful except against Newcastle.

In my opinion someone needs to be sacrificed up front to accomodate players in their best positions and seeing as Rooney just signed. . .

Rooney wants to be a striker. Mata wants to be a CAM. Neither of them can play where they want to play because. . . RvP. At 31 RvP is probably as good as he will ever be (yes, I know, he is damn good) while Rooney is at the age where he should be playing his best and Mata can still develop further.

Fellaini played well, I'll give him that. But that's because he was pushing forward a lot.

It won't work against better teams though, we'll get exposed.
