You can maybe try forcing it to update to a different version, in synaptic. You can also try to force it to unistall completely and install it from a third party repository like getdeb (if you have international cap - however their server is down at the moment http://blog.getdeb.net/2010/05/web-site-and-archive-down-again.html ) or you can use Pidgin's PPA ( http://www.pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/ )
