From what I found online, it does seem that you're right in that I'll have to force install it. Sigh... I'm not up for that today. :)
Maybe I should upgrade my Mint to 9...

Mxit PC on Windows is built pretty much through and through with .NET, so unless Wine supports .NET 3.5, the client is unlikely to work. My colleague at work tried it and it didn't work for him, with Ubuntu 9.10. Pidgin works fine as far as I know.

You could just download the plugin source and compile it quickly. I've done it a few times.

Make sure you have a package called purple-dev installed before you begin.

Download the source from the website, extract it, run the 2 or 3 commands in the readme and it works.

This is of course, the alternative to installing a new version of pidgin. My method will simply had the protocol support to the older versions of pidgin.
