OK, someone suggested it, so here it is. I am doing plenty of reading up on this phone and have plenty to share so to save the haters from many threads I'll keep it all here ;)

First up, GSM Arena just did a blind test in which they supplied unmarked photos taken with the Nokia N8, Samsung Pixon 12 and Sony DSC-HX5v Cyber-shot (a dedicated point and shoot camera) to their readers and asked them to rate them from worst to best. The results surprised even the guys at GSM Arena. They expected the N8 to do well but not by the margin it did :

We went through your comments trying to make sense out of all randomly phrased preferences and here are all the votes casted in this blind test.
HTML:
Camera 1st Place 2nd Place	3rd Place
A. Sony HX5 32 104 33
B. Samsung Pixon12 24 36 115
C. Nokia N8 161 36 11

We had more than 200 readers casting their votes. There is no doubt that the general disposition is that the Nokia N8 is the best camera of the three, followed by the Sony HX5v digicam and finally, the Samsung Pixon12. Yep, the numbers are pretty self-explanatory.

I just did an online check and the Sony Cybershot used above has a RRP of R3,999.

...and now GSM Arena have just published there first preview of the N8!

First impressions

Nokia's free fall over the past three years certainly took them a long way from the top. They still aren't prepared to battle it out at the highest level so they need to buy some time until they get up to speed. And the Nokia N8 seems a damn good shot at that.

It brings enough goodies on the hardware side to make it a best-seller, while introducing significant software updates, which quietly bring Symbian another step forward in the smartphone race. If the handset manages to maintain this kind of performance for the complete out-and-out review, it has every chance of being announced as the best Nokia smartphone since the N95.

Dude u still running symbian? bwahaha nice one!.... No dude seriously? Say you're joking man it aint funny anymore!

I don't get it... what's wrong with Symbian? Look at the CPU clockspeed compared to Android and iOS devices, then compare performance.

Um, sorry are you one of those who think it makes you real cool to be using something like Android? I personally do not choose my phone, nor the OS, to try and appear cool. Symbian works. In fact it works very well. I do not know of one person on this forum who has actually used Symbian^3 yet there seem to be a whole bunch of experts on it on here.

These arguments come across a bit like the ones you hear on this forum between Linux, Windows and Mac fan boys....

Lance, thanks for starting this. The N8 IS going to be hugely popular & This thread is necessary. You have done some good research into this phone & posted many useful links ( in spite of what others may say!) & it made my decision to upgrade to the N8 easier.
Who knows, maybe someday Symbian may even get its own sub-forum :)

What some fail to realise is that I too am making a decision on what phone to get so this research is as much about convincing myself. Luckily for Nokia the more I research the more I realise that this is the one. I really am not too bothered about things that get thrown around so often like "ease of use" and such things. I find Symbian damn easy to use anyway so either I am a lot more advanced than some of those who claim it is complex :D or I am just easily pleased. I also do not need seven home screens, as in my experience of cellphone use there are eventually only about 10 apps at most that you use regularly.

And so far that has been about the only negative of the N8 that has emerged...

Who knows, maybe someday Symbian may even get its own sub-forum :)

We already do! ;) The mods were kind enough to remove all the garbage and move it into separate sub-forums! :D

Just heard something on a video review that I had not considered before....

I know that the N8 has USB on the go which allows you to plug in a USB hard drive, flashstick and the like and view it as a drive on the phone. What I hadn't realised is that it also enables you to plug in a USB keyboard and use that! Or so the review says....

Excellent!

Haters beware, Steve Litchfield is a Symbian fan of sorts so rather don't watch it ;)

Not sure what you mean, that was one of the best reviews I've seen on the N8 yet.
All the things he didn't like about the phone are the reasons I wouldn't want one, but with the positives I can easily see why someone would think this phone is the shizznizz if those are the things they value.

Naah ... for someone who's supposedly biased he did a good job. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing more reviews from him on other devices.

I have read this somewhere :

The N8 will be available from SA operators in early October — in silver from Vodacom and dark grey from MTN and Cell C. A green version will go on sale in November and an orange version (our favourite) some time in 2011.

Now the dates may be a little out but I wonder how accurate the colours are? I was wanting to go with Vodacom as I am gatvol with MTN but I was considering the dark grey N8.... but in saying that the silver is not bad either.

So anyway, there was much joy amongst the Nokia haters when Gizmodo did a speed test for a couple of applications between the N8, the iPhone and the Blackberry Bold. The problem at the time was that it was apparent to all except the most hardened Symbian haters and iPhone/BB/anything other than Symbian fans that the test was anything but fair. It was obvious that the other two users were familiar with their phones and the one using the N8 had no idea what he was doing. The results were used as "proof" of how slow Symbian was.

Here is the original video :

So, what is the reality of the situation then. Let's have a look at someone who knows how to use the phone :

Rather embarrassing seeing those other two "quicker" operating systems getting handed their asses on a plate! ;)

Another embarrassing thing is the number of viewers that fall for this crap and then regurgitate it. Symbian is slow is it?
