Official Super Rugby 2014 Thread

Another thing that rarely gets penalised is the kick chaser falling on the retreating player when he slides to collect the ball.

Definitely, agreed on both accounts.

It's also illegal (from this year) to put your hands on the ground over a ruck and then 'sweep' them back to gather the ball. Have only seen 1 penalty awarded for this so far this year.

It is? That sounds quite ridiculous to be honest. What could possible be illegal about that? If you've shown daylight, remain on your feet, and then get your hands on the ball, it shouldn't matter how you secure the ball at that point. I cannot see the benefit in this ruling, nor what it is they're trying to address...

I honestly feel like reffing (or lack thereof) has seen more of the spotlight this season.

I understand that more 'pressure' has been placed on the refs, but they have the technology to go along with it.... and 'clearly' bad calls are STILL made. Add that to what's mentioned above and we have games that could have had different results, based on the ref.

This I agree with. The 'reason' is that it's easy to throw your arms over the tackled player and when the cleaners come and shove you off, your hands are then pushed back over the ball... IE you are not attempting to play the ball directly, more to try and win a penalty.

But it largely does not make any difference. If I can get to the ball before your cleaners arrive, then surely I am entitled to win the turnover?

Yeah it kind of eliminates the need for cleaners at the ruck, this new rule. Too much nannying going on here. If a player can go through all of the new rigmarole required for a legal attempt at the ball, and does so before the cleaners arrive, there's no reason to penalise him because of the position of his body over the ball ffs. That's just ridiculous...

Yeah... the game has become too technical over the years. I know it's wrong, but I even look at things like uncontested lineouts. If the opposition doesn't even attempt to compete, and the ball is thrown in skew, just let the game go on.

Just to be clear, I still love watching the game, both live and on tv as I'm sure we all do. It's just not cool how the laws can have varying interpretations, often favouring the home team.

Pretty sure I've heard the commentators say at least 3 times that it's now illegal, and I recall in one of the earlier games of the season someone was specifically penalised for it. But, much like skew throw ins into the scrum it isn't being pinged consistently.

I honestly feel like reffing (or lack thereof) has seen more of the spotlight this season.

I want more TMO involvement, tbh. When they see a decision that is patently erroneous from an on-field ref they should be able to patch through to him and advise him.

Unfortunately we've had some shocker TMO decisions over the last couple of months, too. :(

In this case though, the power is in the wrong man's hands. There was that game in NZ I think (forget who was playing) where the TMO advised the ref that a try should not be awarded (which it should not have been) only to have the ref overrule the TMO and award it anyways.

In general, if a ref is having a bad game, but is calling both sides equally, at least there is consistency. I just don't like the fact that they can really take the game away from a team due to rather poor decisions.

Yeah, that was that tool Pastrana.

Some of the refs have performed quite solidly, though.

+10. I have seen this more than once and the ref just lets the game continue. Can not remember one penalty being given for this offense.

I really feel that perhaps the two ref system is the way to go. From the very limited Varsity cup rugby that I saw, it looked like it gave good results not only at scrum time but also in the general game.

This weekend will have some more 50/50 calls..... Why can't teams be consistent?

Yeah, made my picks which on face value would seem pretty obvious!! Toughest would be Highlanders/Bulls. I've gone Bulls by 2.

Crusaders should win against the Cheetahs. Cheetahs just don't seem to have the ability to close out a game this season and the Saders, despite playing well below their potential, have enough class to edge this one.

Reds/Brumbies - Gone Brumbies,

Lions/Sharks - Sharks should cruise

Chiefs/Rebels - Surely Chiefs by some margin

Force/Tahs - Also a very tough call. Very tempted to pick the Force again at home but have gone Tahs by 2... Tough decision...

I've gone with the following:

Highlander vs Bulls - Highlanders by 10 (given it to them on home ground advantage)
Reds vs Brumbies - Brumbies by 7 (The Reds are too inconsistent and rely on flair. The Brumbies are finding a good balance in the team and this will be the Reds' downfall)
Chiefs vs Rebels - Chiefs by 25 (I think the Rebels don't stand a chance here)
Force vs Waratahs - Waratahs by 2 (I think this will be a close call - evenly matched in terms of form for both teams)
Cheetahs vs Crusaders - Crusaders by 15 (The Cheetahs had their great game last week, and history tells us they will capitulate in the next, even to the underperforming Crusaders)
Lions vs Sharks - Sharks by 8 (They're just the better team...:D )

BULLS - I'd rather breed with an Ozzie before I pick a team against them
Brumbies - cause the reds (as observed) are half 'n half at the moment
Chiefs easily - c'mon.
Force are the dark horse and responsible for all of my upset picks. May as well stay with them
Cheetahs - because fück the crusaders
Lions - see above. :D

Not sure what mine will be but I am thinking of:

Bulls if Victor is playing and JL potgieter is fit.
Brumbies - Reds are not consistent enough.
Chief - But the rebels might come closer than we think.
Tahs - The force are in good form and playing at home but the Tahs showed that they can defend against the stormers and that the sharks game was entended to be their lowest point if it was up to them.
Saders - I have this funny feeling the Cheetahs will take this one but if i was going to bet my house I would go with the Saders.
Sharks - The Lions might surprise but it will take a mammoth effort to come from last week's poor performance to beating the Shark. Three things that might just make it possible. Golden Boot at 10, Great performing scrum, Sharks starting slowly due to them coming off a bye.

I think this is how the Bulls fans were born :D :p
For realz though, as much as I'd say the Highlanders are playing well, I just can't see them beating the Bulls.

Otherwise I'm in agreement with DJ's picks. Not that I play superbru, but how I see the weekend playing out.

Boer Soek n Vrou tv show has moved filming to Perth.

Expect more Bulls fans in about a year from now...
