Verblitz pair join Super Rugby’s Cheetahs on short-term deal

Toyota Verblitz announced Wednesday that prop Yosuke Takahashi and fullback Yoshizumi Takeda had joined the Cheetahs Super Rugby franchise on short-term contracts.

The pair are in South Africa as a result of Toyota’s sponsorship of the Cheetahs and a tie-up between the two clubs.

Two youngsters, doubt that they are in the squad to do anything else than training. It is only that I didn’t know that this could possibly be allowed…

As a development plan or program it is a great tool to develop coaches and players, but when these contractees are available to be openly moved into active rosters as per a sponsorship agreement then you are crossing a grey area. Tomorrow a big Super Rugby sponsor can dictate their own ‘Fantasy league’, drafting within their own sponsorship pool.

Since Super Rugby is growing commercially it is probably heading that way anyway…

Unless the teams practice together, I think there will be problems on match day. Look at the Barbarians. Normally great team on paper, but as the players are not used to playing together, it doesn't always work.

The reason why I had made my initial post is due to my own expectations with SANZAAR being open on these agreements. The Super Rugby regulations covering this is a process, a registration.

I have no issue with Verblitz which is owned by Toyota Motors being part in developing their ‘industrial’ union team players in other unions where they have a sponsorship agreement.

Typical agreements like these are a temporary loan to develop Asian, Polynesian and other island-based players within the Super Rugby structure which has been done by Australasian teams throughout the years in competition.

The issue is more to do with when a sponsor has the power to place players where they have an agreement in place, which is the grey area. It is more a question where the power should be, at the sponsor or at the Union(s)/Franchise(s) and the governing body?

In my opinion moves like these can ‘possibly’ enable other larger sponsors to dictate the recruitment drive, than the Unions which engage in scouting and rugby academies.

Obviously there are agreements in place, but transparency…
 
Sunwolves team named, the better team in my opinion,

The two positives,

1) No Ed Quirk in the starting line-up.
2) No Tim Bond

Both has shown discipline issues since day one, though experienced they messed up.

The change, 5 Sunwolves debutants,

- Tomas Leonardi
- Kaito Shigeno
- Viliami Lolohea
- Futoshi Mori
- Yuki Yatomi

The good,

1. Lolohea is having his Sunwolves debut
2. Their best wingers are selected to open the game.
3. Best centre pair in their squad with Sasakura on the bench available as centre and winger.
4. An scrummie, Kaito Shigeno, with ITM cup experience, sorry that Atsushi Hiwasa is dropped. However they have 2 scrummies on the bench...
5. A replacement hooker... which I think is an experimental move to balance their props on the exchange. Horie will also be rested.

I don't know much about the Argentine, Tomas Leonardi, other than his short-lived time at the Kings, whether he is good on 8 I do not know.

My only issue with this team is that Atsushi Hiwasa should had been in the 23.

Yup, thought the same thing. Not that it will help the Kings, but hopefully there's a post match citation.
