Official Super Rugby Thread 2012

Yeah it is. Wouldn't mind seeing your bench though. Remember how PDV poor use of the bench almost cost us against the Lions?

One player whom is an absolute legend but has fallen from grace since his injury is Pierre Spies. I remember how gutted I was when news that he wouldn't be going to the 2007 world cup broke. You can say what you want but that is a guy playing, at most, to 70% of his ability. There is no ways he can dodge the disease inherited from his father, pulmonary embolism. Chances are he is currently on (and will be for the rest of his life) blood thinning medication. He could theoretically bleed out from a cut or a broken nose incurred while playing.

I know a guy who has the same condition, his diagnosis completely changed his life. A simple nose bleed could end him. This is a hands on, physical guy, 6.4 body builder and health shop owner, completely changed the way he has to live his life now.

My bench will be a 5/2 split because of the way the english play.

16 - Chilliboy / Strauss
17 - Coenie Oosthuizen (Can scrum both sides thus ahead of Werner Kruger)
18 - Flip vd Merwe
19 - Willem Alberts (Can cover 8th man / flanker and even lock in a pinch)
20 - Potgieter or Daniels (Daniels as Potgieter has not played a lot of rubgy this year) - I would have loved to see Josh Struass (Baardman) here.
21 - Pienaar (With the cover and utility in Hougie, F Steyn and Lambie, Pienaar can play scrummie but also gives us some cover in the 15 slot as well as 10)
22 - JP Pietersen / Mvovo

no game breakers on your bench, ala Aplon type player?

Habana is getting pretty old now guys, he was a star in the 07 cup and years prior to that.

Might not feel like it to him, but that was 5 years ago.

If he did not have a major lift in his game this season I would not have picked him BUT he does look revitalised and comitted, couple that with the fact tht we need some experience in this team, he really does pick himself.

I'd have to agree with this. Not so long ago it looked like things were drawing to a close for him, but I think he's lifted his game enough to warrant a spot in the Springbok team. I think this may very well be his "deciding year" for the Boks. Ie. If he doesn't perform well, his days may be numbered. Then again...HM IS the new coach.... :p (In all fairness to HM though, let's give the guy a shot -as has been mentioned before.)

Cape Town - Springboks Wynand Olivier and Ryan Kankowski will shortly head overseas to continue their rugby careers in Japan, according to Volksblad.

The duo have already informed Bok coach Heyneke Meyer of their intentions to further their careers abroad.

They are due to leave South Africa at the end of the Super Rugby competition and could be earning more than R500 000 per month playing in the Japanese league.

Negotiations between Olivier, his Japanese club and the Bulls regarding his Super Rugby participation are at an advanced stage. His contract is believed to be for two-years.

Kankowski's stint in Japan is likely to be for six months only. His soured relationship with Sharks coach John Plumtree is believed to have played a part in his desire to leave.

It is unsure if the two will play any part in South Africa's Rugby Championship campaign later in the year.

Both will feature for the Boks in the final Test against England at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, with Olivier starting at inside centre and Kankowski providing loose forward cover on the bench.

Maybe Japan can teach Olivier how to pass.

Ryan got a bad deal from the coach, it would appear. Never knew that.

I don't believe it's coach related. It's just another example of sensationalistic reporting.

If you think about it practically, why would a player having a dispute with his coach pack up his family and friends and go play rugby in a country half way across the planet, with absolutely no rugby pedigree (other than the money they throw at trying to make the sport a success in Japan) ,with a culture so far removed from our own...??

I'm sure there half a dozen local provinces that would pay good money to have the services of Kanko. His decision is poorly a financial one IMO, no need to drag the coach into it.

Well I do not rate either one of them being in the top 3 list in SA for their respective positions so no great loss.

I am glad Olivier is going as now at the Bulls we have Venter, Sadie and JJ.

Gees dude!! We got a few teams languishing at the bottom of the Super 15 log and a few others not doing all that well, plus the prospect of a new franchise joining the competition next year.

The last thing SA rugby can afford is to start hemorrhaging players to the Japanese league.

I really do not care for Olivier or Kanko as neither one imo is good enough to play for the boks (kanko could have been a good flanker).

I am more worried about a player like CJ Stander that is leaving for Ireland.

Nooit dude!! So there potentially 30 players that could make up the Springbok squad, as long as they don't leave you happy?? anyone else you won't miss??!!

Come on man?!!

Every player that ducks is a blow!!

Never knew CJ was ducking too!!! F uck!!!

People are giving up on this country...

Lol, no, as long as the right players stay the less talented can go play wherever they want.

Stander is a HUGE blow.... SA schools and u20 captain IIRC. 13 games, 4 tries this Super season (his first). As good as Kolisi is I rate CJ higher... BUT if he wants to go to ireland then good riddance.

I don't know hey, I've always rated Kanko quite highly its just that the Boks style of rugby doesn't suite him. In broken play he is like having an extra backline player that can step and beat people for pace. He will only be gone for 6 months by the sounds of things and will then rejoin with the Sharks for next years Super Rugby.

Agreed. I love the way he plays too. Yes, he has been absent this season due to injury but fully fit he can run with the best of them.

An 8th man should do what an 8th man should do, not hang around oun the fringes....

Well that is my opinion.

I would have liked to see him on open side flanker as he has the speed and bulk to rip the game open.

Eina Lions!!

MTN Lions coach John Mitchell has been suspended with immediate effect after several players listed grievances against him and the manner in which he treats them.

The suspension was confirmed by GLRU President Kevin de Klerk in an interview with the website Rugby365.

It is not the first time Mitchell has fallen out of favour with his players. In 2008 when he was head coach of the Australian Super Rugby outfit Western Force, players and fellow coaching staff also rebelled against the way he treated them and he was put on restricted duty.

Mitchell was also axed as All Blacks coach in 2003 after he failed to take the team to the final. Rumours later emerged that some players were also unhappy about his coaching style.

Lions assistant coaches Carlos Spencer and Johann Ackermann will now take over the reigns and see the Lions through the rest of the 2012 Super Rugby season.
Kevin de Klerk told Rugby365′s Jan de Koning that “the nature of the complaints is so serious that we have suspended him, pending further investigation,”
