Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

The first thing you should check is if your GPS and Wi-Fi are on. GPS will kill your battery in no time. Put it off when not needed.

For a stock Froyo rom, wait for it to be released here. The upgrade through Kies will keep all your apps and settings. If you choose this option, install One Click Lag Fix and root and apply the lagfix to your stock eclair phone. It really does make a difference. Remember

.....

Hope this helped. Let me know if you need any more help or I left something out.

Thanks for the assitance!
I have tried switching off everything but it seems the phone tries to pump more power into getting signal when you have none.
So I've decided to go the custom rom root.
Just flashed the phone, couldnt find OCLF on the market or appbrain so I used this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 to perform the root.
Busy waiting on titanium to finish running for all my backups then I'm going to go with Doc's rom v9.01.

Silly question though, I can get into 3 button recovery mode (used it to root the phone) so does that mean its working 100% and I dont need to run the fix above?

Can you access Recovery and Download modes by using the 3 button press and NOT through ADB? Some people seem to think that "3 button recovery" is accessed through ADB as well. It's not, that's just Recovery mode. :p Just make 100% sure...

(Sorry if I seem ignorant of your skills / knowledge, just don't want you to break your precious Galaxy S)

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I'm doing the rather safe than a sad panda method so I will take any advice.
Both recovery and download mode work with just the button combo on powerup.

I've got clockwork recovery mod up and running and just backed up my standard rom to the SD.

Hey guys, i just flashed to docs 3rd of December v9.01 rom and after a few days of using it I cant use the internet... This is when wifi is disabled. My 3g/edge/hsdpa icon isnt showing anymore so I cannot access the internet when wifi is disabled. This is using both a vodacom and mtn simcard.. What do i do? Also "Data Network Mode" is activated..

manually enter your internet settings into the phone.

I'm guessing you've flashed the rom by now.
If not, boot into clockwork and install zip from SD and you should be good to go.

Also, I tried Darky's ROM and it's by far the best I've tried. He should be releasing a new version in the next few days though so maybe hold off for that.

Yeah got the phone up and running now with 9.1 JPO. Messed up the first install but managed to sort it out with just reseting to factory and re doing the process. Apparently you have to boot first before trying to put on the theme pack etc :P

So far loving the improved speed. Haven't had a chance to see how battery life fares though. Titanium backup is amazing, too bad it didin't back up my sms messages (or contacts, but those I exported manually just incase).

Now some quick questions seeming the phone is rooted:
- Is there a way to get google navigation to work in SA?
-Are there any risks if I use a market enabler?

Going to look up Darky's ROM now as I'm curious :P

I used BRUT maps, it is basically google maps with voice navigation

Edit: Sorry didn't see Maddmatt already said this

anyone know the mtn internet settings? I've looked around and they are all different.\

EDIT: All sorted. Thanks guys.

You can just dial *123*1#
And select option 1 or 2 or 3
The settings will be sms'ed to your phone and you can choose to apply it.

Note:
MTN applies these settings(Internet and MMS) in a single APN settings profile. I had to split them manually for the APNDroid app(if you sue it) to work correctly when Enabling MMS only.

A major update has come out from Samsung, but it's not officially released yet (No it's not Gingerbread).
XDA thread with download link for those of you that don't care about the warranty:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865701

It's Android 2.2.1. Seems to have many improvements, I'll list what I've gathered so far:
Performance is much faster (although not clear what they improved yet, but Quadrant benchmark is about 1200).
It adds support for OTA updates (straight to the phone, no PC needed).
More RAM is available to applications (339MB as opposed to about 304MB).
Lockscreen can have its own wallpaper.
Less effort to unlock with glass lockscreen.
Camera app shows aa small preview of the last picture.
Video player shows subtitles.

Thanks for the info Matt. Surely the OTA updates mean gingerbread is in the works...

I want to sync all my sms's with kies and back them up to my PC, but seems like kies doesn't support google contacts, so all my sms's are showing "no name".
is there a way to fix that (without copying all my contacts to my phone, i am very happy with google contacts).
is anyone using sms backup + to backup sms's to gmail?

I use SMS Backup by Christoph Studer(auto syncs with GMail, and threads the SMS's). The other app I use for internal backups is SMS Backup & Restore by Ritesh Sahu.

Updated to doc XXJPU v1.1. Froyo 2.2.1 seems pretty damn fast so far. Havent re-installed any apps yet though. Wi-fi strength seems to have improved...can anyone confirm this?

Seems like Doc's XXJPU v1.1 is still a bit experimental, as is the whole JPU kernel. I'll wait a week or so and see how it pans out, especially with Hardcore and Speedmod kernels being updated to be based on the JPU kernel as well. :D This phone just keeps getting better by the week...

Hi

Could someone please advise me how to upgrade my phone firmware? I just got the phone and the Android platform is still all new to me

Best would be to read this thread or several of the thread available on XDA Developers. Note that unofficial (hacked/custom) ROMs will void the warranty on your phone, so do it at your own risk. It opens up a whole new world on your device, however... Have fun. ;)
