Official thread: Varsity Cup 2013

NMMU are having an amazing competition. For so long they were the competition's whipping boys along with TUT but they have improved in leaps and bounds. Could make the SF this year!

Lets not talk about UCT...

1 Maties 5 5 0 0 58 3 23
2 Tuks 5 3 0 2 66 4 16
3 UJ 5 3 0 2 44 4 16
4 NMMU 5 3 1 1 14 1 15
5 NWU-Puk 5 3 0 2 15 2 14
6 Shimlas 5 2 0 3 51 4 12
7 Ikeys 5 0 1 4 -49 3 5
8 Wits 5 0 0 5 -200 1 1

Tuks move into second and NMMU into 4th

NMMU showed potential last year, but this has been amazing. 3 home wins, an away draw and a narrow away loss. I'm really hoping that they can pull of a semi-final place.

NMMU and Shimlas screwed up my picks :p

Well done to them though!

Article about pro players, and fake students in the varsity cup:

Oh what to do with the Varsity Cup?

News surfacing this week is that a very prominent Varsity Cup side is again in the dock, having been accused of cheating on student numbers in every game this season. It is alleged that the side accused of cheating are angling for some sort of plea bargain that will see them docked just five log points from a single game, but at least one advocate suggests that there is precedent from overseas leagues where all points are docked from a team for each transgression.

It remains to be seen as to how public the Varsity Cup management will go with this.

With other stories surfacing about players not even knowing what they are supposed to be studying and being paid in the region of R20 000 per month, open club players being farmed out to Varsity Cup sides for the tournament before returning to their original club, none of the players of the tournament nominees last year being a student, one player seeking a transfer thinking that his course was a correspondence course given that he was not required to attend lectures, the tournament has quite clearly arrived at a watershed moment.

It's something which I have had a problem with for a long while. I'm totally against pro players in this competition. While USSA structures have their issues, at least those tournaments are for actual students.

Well done to Maties,Tuks, UJ & NMMU for making the semifinals. I'm very pleased for NMMU for making it, they deserve it (although not my team)

Tuks the guilty party, last year 6 teams were guilty of the same. It even happens in the Varsity "koshuis" league. Players that are not students play by just using somebody's student number.

Maties 16 - 15 NMMU

That last minute penalty was heartbreaking, had NMMU scored, they would have won 16-17. Also, NMMU socred 3 tries to Maties 2, but missed every kick they took.

In the Varsity Cup conversions are worth 3 points and penalties and drop goals 2.

I must agree that NMMU has been awesome this season. Hope they keep on bettering themselves for next year's tourney.

Final : Tuks 44 Maties 5 Well done Tuks you totally outplayed and outclassed Maties in the final.
